Default Update Clean Up

In Windows XP you periodically had to remove the temporarary files
created during windows updates.

IS this necessary in Windows 8.1? I have a large drive on the laptop
but I don't want it filled with garbage.

I have been using "Windows XP Update Remover" from tech-pro.net

As far as I know, they remain on your hard disk and like Windows XP,
you're obligated to 'clean up' the hard disk to remove them.

Is there a clean up utility like the one for XP?

CCleaner is one that comes to mind.
You can remove those files as well as clean up many other items with it.

I personally have used it for a few years with no problems on my
machines but your mileage may vary...

They have a free version as well as a Professional ($24.95) and
Professional Plus ($39.95) available for those who want them.
The prices for the paid versions may change but that is what their web
site is showing for the present.

CCleaner does an excellent job of cleaning unneeded files and registry
entries. I'd suggest that. However, I think that for the purpose of
removing temp files, you can also just right-click on your hardware from
within Windows Explorer, go to Properties and use the Disk Cleanup
options there as well.

It's in Disk Cleanup. Cleanup system files. Ms added it to Windows 7 Disk
Cleanup also. I haven't used it on Win 8, but on Win 7, it did not remove
every update. It only removed updates before a certain date.

KenW

Windows XP also had the Clean up System files but to get rid of the
temporary Update files the Remover program was required. Is that still true

You can just delete them. Been too long since I had XP, forgot name of
folder.

Back to the Original Thread. The object of my original request was to
first know In WINDOWS 8.1, if there were temp files from MS updates that
needed to be removed.

Second In WINDOWS 8.1 if there were temp files from MS Updates, was
there a program like the one available to remove them.

Yes I know it can be done manually but the program is more convenient

My current Security packagae is McAfee Live Safe and it has a facility
to "Quick Clean" many things from the machine including old ActiveX
files, Cookies, Browser Cache, Recycle Bin, Lost Fragment files etc etc.

All these can be configured to do it automatically at set times like
04:00 AM once a week or once a month when you are not likely to be using
your machine.

The good thing with McAfee Live Safe is that all your devices are
covered with one license. I paid £20 subscription for three years when
I bought a new Dell machine and now my two othe devices - desktop and
toshiba laptop are also covered by this one sub. They can all be
tracked online to see their state at any point in time.

I know people here don't like McAfee stuff but you need to try it to
know it better.

See: Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Disk Cleanup
Select drive and then press Cleanup System Files
Select drive (again)
Put a check mark against file categories you want to delete.

Disk Cleanup is the program to use for 8.1 I don't know about any
"other" program to use unless someone has a "tweak" program. I am sure
that Win 8.1 is so new, there will be tweak programs around in the
future. Some of them were fantastic for XP and to a lesser extent 7.

KenW

Thanks to all who responded. It is so difficult to get any real
information on Windows 8.1.

My suggestion was made to the OP. I never try to teach old dogs new
tricks so don't know what made you think it was meant for you.

Ok, then I'll amend my post to say "No one needs to try it." Better?

But it *was* a syllogism.

It wasn't

"I know people here don't like McAfee stuff but you need to try it",

it was

"I know people here don't like McAfee stuff but you need to try it to
know it better".

I.e., if you don't try it you won't get to know it better.

That seems harmless to me.

Thanks, but I don't need to know it better (than I already do), and
therefore I still don't need to try it.
