Default asus mx440-8x display drivers

I'm having a very difficult time installing display
drivers with my asus graphics card. I'm running windows
xp pro, with a abit sr7-8x motherboard. after installing
the drivers before actually restarting, if I look at the
properties of the card it shows it on pci slot 1--but
it's an AGP card. after trying to reboot i can not boot
to windows unless I use 'last known good configuration'
or safe mode. Currently im just using the failsafe VgSave
driver, but it won't let me play games or do other things
involving hardware acceleration.
