Default Master boot record corrupted?

This has happened to me twice already!!!! While running
some programs, the computer frezees and when I restart it
the OS doesn't want to boot, it just shows a little
blinking cursor and stays there. I think the Master boot
record keeps getting messed up or something but there's
this other thing, when I run scandisk it says that I have
an error which is an Interrupt 13 hook. I don't know what
this means so I need help. I can't risk having to format
my computer again and losing all my data again. Please
help. How can I prevent or fix this. If you need any more
info to help me just ask. I'm running XP pro with 96 mb
ram, 533 MHz, 160 gig drive, 60 gig drive.

It somewhat refers to my problem but it doesn't tell me
why the system would just hang up at boot time. Is there
anything that pertains to the computer just showing a
blinking cursor at startup. It doesn't even say that the
OS can't be found but it just stalls there and does
nothing.
