Default hangs on shutdown - Win XP Pro SP 1

"The server {F3A614DC-ABE0-11D2-A441-00C04F795683} did
not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

This is an error I got. Any idea what it is?

-----Original Message-----
Are any errors getting reported in the eventlogs at

shutdown.

start/run
eventvwr.msc

You could make a change in group policy so that you get

a few additional
messages, this may narrow it down a bit,

start/run
gpedit.msc

Navigate to computer configuration\administrative

templates\system
In right hand pane, enable "Verbose vs Normal Status

Messages"

Have you installed or updated any software recently.

Make sure you don't have any unsigned drivers on your

system

start/run
sigverif

You could also scan all windows xp system files, it will

try to repair what
it finds out of place.

start/run
sfc /scannow

My PC recently started to hang on shutdown. I get to
the "Windows is Shutting Down" screen and when the PC
typically turned itself off, it keeps gonig with
the "Windows is Shutting Down" screen (for an

indefinate
amount of time.

I have to manually power down now. This problem

recently

You got this during shutdown ?

Looks like the messenger class. Do you run windows messenger ? Whats the
event id ?

What information do you get by clicking on the go.microsoft link ?

Maybe that is not a shutdown error.

However, I don't have any specific errors in the event viewer after multiple
shutdown (and suspend) attempts.

I am drawing a blank still. I have a couple of nonsigned drivers, but
nothing that is new...

Did you make the group policy change to get verbose shutdown messages ?

When you shutdown, do you get any of the boxes popping up saying that
windows is waiting for a task to finish, and you get the option to end it
now, or hit cancel.

Do you have any sound problems, windows plays a sound at shutdown, is it
getting stuck there?

Try closing everything manually before shutting down, including anything
running in your system tray, such as firewall or antivirus software and any
other 3rd party processes.

Before you shutdown, record a list of all processes that are running.
If you have windows xp home download the tasklist.exe program from here,

http://www.computerhope.com/download/winxp.htm

XP professional has it as standard.

From a command prompt run

tasklist /svc tasks.txt

If you still get a problem shutting down having manually shutdown everything
you can think of , when the system restarts, post the contents of the
tasks.txt file.
