I had to do a clean install ( shutdown /r /o ) of Win10 v1903;

To save time, I activated it using a well-known key.

I used the "Chrome Inspector" ( a.k.a. "Browser Toolbox" ); see:

I'm not done modifying my copy of Visual Studio 2019

I would just have placed the HD in a new machine.

Win10 is one of the best operating systems I've seen for surviving a
transplant into different H/W

I probably would have looked for an identical mobo on ebay first

Win10 would probably need re-activating though

I'm not done modifying my copy of Visual Studio 2019
initially, I had to use Notepad++ instead.

For some _ strange _ reason,
my PC simply got more-n-more stable with time; it's fine now.

My firmware was only 1 month older than the current release;
but I updated it anyways.

( MSI MPG z390 Gaming Edge AC ) Motherboard Drivers:

M-Flash BIOS, April 1, 2019, vA50 -- E7B17IMS.A50
Chipset Driver, May 8, 2019, v10.1.17968.8131
Network Drivers, July 30, 2019, v24.0.0.11
RST ( SSD, M.2 ) Driver, May 8, 2019, v17.2.6.1027
Wi-Fi Driver (unused), July 30, 2019, v21.30.1.0
RealTek Audio (unused), Aug 7, 2019, v6.0.8765.1
iGPU (unused), March 6, 2019, v25.20.100.6471

I used MSI's "Mystic Light" to turn off the motherboard's LEDs.

The CPU fan has an LED controller on its cable; I turned it off.

On the ATX case, I use a front panel button to turn off fan LEDs;
I covered the _ Bright _ blue "On" LED with 4 layers of Gorilla tape;
I left the red "hard disk activity" LED as is ( it's barely noticeable ).

Front panel USBs: 2.0, 2.0, 3.0
Back: 2.0, 2.0, 3.1, 3.1, 3.1 Gen2, 3.1 Gen2 TypeC
( 20 volt, 100 watt {hot}, 8k 60Hz +audio ).

Aug 12, 2019: 130 $, Loctek Monitor Arm, Max: 33 lbs, 34 inch monitor.
Aug 9, 2019: 34 $, Logitechg 600 mouse (cheap!).
Aug 6, 2019: 80 $, ddr4 RAM, 3 GigaHz ( gaming mode ), 16 gigs.
80 $, Amazon Fire Tablet.
296 $, i7-8700, 4.25+ GigaHz ( gaming mode ).
34 $, CPU Fan, 4 copper, water-in-a-vacuum HeatPipes.
178 $, "MSI MPG z390 Gaming Edge AC" motherboard.
80 $, ATX Mid-Tower Chassis.
Jul 26, 2019: 150 $, MSI GeForce GTX 1650 video card, MadVR 4k, 60 fps.
Jul 16, 2019: 64 $, TP-Link AC1750, Archer a7 router.
May 1, 2019: 142 $, Logitech g635 HeadSet, after-tax.
Feb 18, 2018: 114 $, Logitech g910 keyboard.
Jul 12, 2017: 978 $, 4k, 40", 25 lb, Philips bdm4037uw curved monitor.
Nov 21, 2015: 350 $, 1 TeraByte Samsung 850 EVO, SATA III.
Dec 8, 2012: 160 $, Fanless power supply, Rosewill SilentNight.
Jul 27, 2011: 152 $, Brother DCP-7065DN Laser Printer+Scanner.

3'022 $ Total, before Seattle's 10% tax.

You forgot something in your price list. I got $2,862.
But a lot of that is not the PC. A Router? Fire Tablet? Printer?

But I will say it sounds like a nice rig. Should scream. I never have
had a PC over 3.2Ghz.

Tablets are for when, sadly, you can't have a PC.

nope. for many tasks, a tablet is the the best and sometimes only
choice. for other tasks, it is not. choose the best tool for the job.

Depends on how you define the word "shortage".

no it doesn't.

Fewer apps and fewer peripherals would be okay,
provided you're not into computers.

Default Z390 upgrade

v25.20.100.6471

Coincidentally, I decided to pull the trigger on a new Gigabyte Aorus
Master Z390 mobo to replace my aging machine. Bought a new processor to
go with it, i9 9900K (unlocked). (I don't plan to overclock, but that's a
nice option to have.)

Also bought a new Cooler Master HAF Lan case and a power supply, as well
as RAM. Oh, and Corsair water CPU cooler -- which was much easier to
install than the last time I tried to put one of those coolers on a CPU.

The hardware came right up after powering up, but I couldn't get anything
to boot on it -- neither my Windows 10 drive, nor my (new) Linux nvme x4
2T stick.

After struggling for a while, came to realize I needed a BIOS/EFI update
to run an i9 on this motherboard. Fortunately, the BIOS/EFI ran in such a
way that I wouldn't need to swap in another processor just to run the BIOS
update -- so once I figured out how to use the EZ Flash with a USB flash
drive, things were looking up.

Windows still didn't want to boot on its own though, I ended up
downloading a Win10 pro iso and booting _that_ off USB, followed by
startup repair. Though it told me it couldn't repair startup, it must
have done something, because Windows would boot after that.

Then I tried my Linux 2T nvme, and that booted right up. I think it was
the BIOS update that made that work, not anything to do with Win10
"startup repair".

I used MSI's "Mystic Light" to turn off the motherboard's LEDs.

The CPU fan has an LED controller on its cable; I turned it off.

On the ATX case, I use a front panel button to turn off fan LEDs;
I covered the _ Bright _ blue "On" LED with 4 layers of Gorilla tape;
I left the red "hard disk activity" LED as is ( it's barely noticeable
).

Yeah, my system came with some of this frippery. I specifically bought
RAM and a cooler that avoided the light show. Even so, the mother board
has LED's, which I switched to blue and left them. It's all a bunch of
tomfoolery -- but as Dad used to say about cars with racing stripes, "it
makes it go faster".
