Ed 7-zip http://www.7-zip.org/ Not sure about others, but I've been editing some of the extensions in ..XPI format. They're zip files, and you can open them in 7zip extract an item like an image, and when you save the change, 7zip asks you is you want to update the zip since an external program change a file. And it will put it back and the xpi file is still good. WinRar 4.x did not do that. I read info that 7zip was the advised program to use to do edits like that. Since then I've only used 7zip. And it handles the tar.bz or whatever they are from linux systems. A plus. |

Ed Win RAR 7Z Mainly for its skill as an Archive Manager, as well as for its decompression capabilities. You can burrow into lots of stuff with 7-ZIP. Decompressing a RAR is just a bonus. I have this installed on *every* Windows install here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7-zip What 7-zip is missing, is the ability to handle the twenty or thirty "packers" out there. I expect AV programs have that, but 7-zip doesn't. This is an example of a packer, and I don't know the names of the rest. When you get a download off the net, the more packers of this type you find, the higher the risk the download is "evil" :-) This forces me to run stuff in a VM, just so I can get around the unpackers. A packer has two purposes: (good) saves file size (bad) obfuscates malware. Like when you want to know there's a toolbar hiding in that download you just got, you don't want a packer getting in the way of that determination. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upx To give an example of a custom packer, the Microsoft monthly MRT download, it's packed with something I can't find a reference to it. I can use 7-ZIP to examine it to the "first level", but the biggest file in the download is inaccessible to my tool collection. Paul |

With those files highlighted go to share at the top of the window and select Share. Select the Zip folder on the left to the toolbar and a Zipped file will be created for the highlighter documents. Like it has always been if you want to add files to the Zip file. Open the Zip files and drag or copy & paste the new files to the opened Zip file. |

I've been using WinRAR for what seems like 15 years or so and it's one of the first utilities I install on a new system. In the last year or two I also have 7zip installed, which I run now and then just to remind me why I stay with WinRAR. 7zip doesn't hold a candle to WinRAR...but if it meets your needs then by all means you should use it. |

Actually, WinRAR _does_ offer to do that. Yes, it does, but for the application I was applying it to, the resulting file was not rebuilt properly and some marker made the file unworkable. As far as a zip file was concerned, it was still readable, but from the application, it was not usable. Minor technicality, but major bummer. |
