Default how to reformat my HD Help!

You can't format a drive if it is the one that you are
working in. eg. you can't format the C: if your booting to
the C:.... if you boot to A: (or any other drive) and then
do Format C:

hi ,
I am trying to reformat my hard disk so I can wipe
the slate clean and do a clean install of WIN XP. Which
is on there now but since the upgrage things have been
sorta funky, You know that happens with upgrades alot! So
I have tries 2 ways that I know how yet it just will not
do anything. I went to command prompt and did a CD C:\ to
put me in the root directory the I type this Format C:
the prompts come up and I answer yes to all of then and
then nothing happens at all
I also tried to do this by right clicking the hard drive
selecting format and still it prompts me about not being
able to and nothing gets do again. please help me I am
