Default Backup storage means

I'm looking for a backup storage means that is small enough to fit
into my bank safe box without taking up all the available space. I
have been using USB Flash Drives but the ones I have are too small to
hold all my files I would like to store. I also use some hard drives
in external hard drive boxes and this works very well except they are
so large I don't have room for anything else in my bank safe box.

Are there any other storage means that I could use for this?

You might consider purchasing an external docking station or hard drive
enclosure which are available supporting transfer rates using esata,
usb2.0, usb3.0 for 2.5" and 3.5" SATA hard drives

Thanks, Winston. I have three Dynex external hard drive cases and
these work very well except that they are too large to store
conveniently in my bank safe box. That is, there is little room left
for anything else. I'm hoping to find something in the form of a USB
flash drive that is much smaller. I need about 20 GB of storage space
on any such, and I have not found any flash drives that have anywhere
near this storage capacity. Gordon

2.5" SSD, SATA
2.75" x .3" x 4"
There is not much smaller AND practical.

Flash drives usb2.0 32 gig and larger at newegg.com ranging from $20 US.
Corsair brand are what I use and have never had a problem with them.

The product(s) available on the site suggested have the option of only
needing to store the 2.5 hard drive in the safe deposit box. If you
can't fit a 2.5" drive wrapped in plastic in the box, then maybe a
larger box is in order. g

Optionally 32GB Flash drives are available.

Name the *amount* of storage you need, so we can suggest stuff.

Do you need 32GB of storage, 1TB of storage, or what ?

Also, do you have a budget ?

You can find 32GB flash sticks, USB3/USB2 interface, for less
than $40. And they're decently fast. I use this on my USB2 computer.
This is much better than some of the truly awful Sandisk you can
find (the ones that the transfer rate goes up and down like a yoyo).
Sandisk should be ashamed of themselves.

Lexar S73.

http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/produ...5ff1032 fen02

*******

A second solution would be a 2.5" SSD. Shock resistant, so
won't get hurt if it is dropped (within reason). You open the
computer, and connect a SATA data and SATA power cable to it.
Transfer rates are truly amazing.

As an example, you can get up to 1TB of capacity, in the 2.5" form
factor - for a price. Only buy the size you need, as they get
cheaper if they're smaller capacities.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227797

This has roughly the same dimensions as the previous item, but
is only $99. Just, don't drop it. A 2.5" hard drive.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822145875

*******

If you need tiny, like "hide it in your sock" tiny, there is
SD or microSD. You can use a USB card reader to load one of
these. It uses a flash chip, like a USB flash does. Just takes
less space.

128GB, the size of your thumbnail. $104. Many cheaper ones
available.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820239407

MicroSD, you can easily lose them. This one is 64GB.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820171571

The dimensions of those, are listed here. MicroSD is 11mm x 15mm.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital

This is an example of a USB card reader, suitable for
plugging in a SD memory product. I bought a different
brand of these just yesterday, and it worked immediately
as a storage device when plugged into WinXP. You plug the
SD into the key, then plug the key into the computer, and
you're then all set to start copying.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820283018

From a reliability perspective, buy two and make two identical copies.
The 11mm x 15mm means you can hide one of the copies in the soft
cushions.

I agree with Winston, those SATA hard drive docking stations (AKA
Toasters) do a great job for making backups.

As long as the docking station you choose specifies it can handle the
2.5 and 3.5 format you are free to grab about any bare SATA drive, make
your backup, and store just the bare drive (hopefully in the anti-static
envelope it came in) in your banks safe deposit box.

Budget isn't a major problem, but I want to keep expenses under
control, more or less. I currently need about 20 BG but this will
likely increase with time. I already have three 500 GB hard drives in
Dynex external drive boxes and these work well, but are too large to
store conveniently in my bank safe box. Gordon

FWIW, I use the Western Digital Passport
http://www.staples.com/Western-Digit...DB KXH5000ABK.
It's 3.2" wide. You can keep a complete drive image plus your data,
and, a bunch of other stuff.

1. Any docking station (or USB to SATA) adapter that can connect to a
3.5" drive can connect to a 2.5" drive. The plugs on the drives are
identical. BTW, USB3 is satisfyingly faster than USB2.

Bare 2.5" drives will fit into any safe-deposit box that I have ever
rented. Come to think of it, so will 3.5" HDDs.

2. I just bought a 64GB thumb drive for $30. They're usually $40 and up,
but that's not too bad either.

3. Or SDHC at 64GB. Here's my first hit at Amazon:

Use an external USB2 or USB3 dock and 2.5" hard drives--same hard
drives as used in notebooks or laptops. Fit 2-4 laptop drives in the
same physical space of a 3.5" drive.

http://www.newegg.com/Laptop-Hard-Dr...ategory/ID-380

320GB drives for $50 each = 15-16 backups at 20GB each. A 500GB is
about $75 = 24-25 backups at 20GB each. Figure the dock costs $50 (one
time expense) for all sizes of drives. Alternatively rent a bigger
deposit box--or a second one of the same size--and solve your problem
forever by keeping more stuff at the bank (for a fee, of course).

I got a USB 128 GB thumb drive from eBay, that's physically no bigger
than most thumb drives out there. How much space do you need?

As an alternative, I also got a 256 GB mSATA SSD (also from eBay) for
a little over $300 that's about as big as half a credit card (but a
little thicker), and an mSATA to SATA caddy ($14 or so) that can plug
into a SATA-USB3 dock. Sounds complicated, but it means that I can
save 256 GB on a half-credit-card format and just put that bit in the
safe. It's physical size is smaller than two USB thumb drives.
