Default Net View FQDN Problem

We've got some XP computers which are joined to a 2003 domain. Here are the
symtpoms:

Ping Server IP - OK
Net View Server IP - OK

Ping Server NetBIOS name - OK
Net View Server NetBIOS name - OK

Ping Server FQDN - OK
Net View Server FQDN - FAILURE

Ping domain (school.local) - OK
Net View domain (school.local) - FAILURE

We can map drives on the server etc, but because we can use \\school.local
we can't get the PCs to pick up Group Policies.

We have got about 16 of these PCs with the same problem, but we've also got
about 30 PCs which do work fine (which rules out any problem with the server).
