Live Messenger Log-In Issue

Log -in pops up, I enter in my e-mail address and get a couple of letters
into my password and the window closes. I can't get the log-in window to stay
open long enough to log-in! New to this so if I am missing something basic
sorry but getting pretty frustrated.
