Default XP Flips set Icons!

I set my preferred icon for various programs in folder options / File Types
etc. But, for instance, when I simply go into those options and change the
icon or association of a program, the icons of some other file types flip
back to the program default icon. If I change the icon (or anything) dealing
with audio icons, WMP icon reverts to its default icon.......same with
Winamp and some other programs. Why are these icons so unstable? Is there a
security setting that can prevent this, and still allow me access the target
program? I can go back into folder options and reset the preferred icon, but
all I have to do is open the programs file types options and...the file
icons flip back to the programs default again! Is there a way to set your
preferred icon and maintain it?

Thanks,

Oreally
