Thunderbird email problem
Gmail keeps returning T-bird messages. Tried two Gmail locations (one mine,
the other my sister) so not Gmail setting. Once put it in Gmail Spam folder instead of returning it. Can't find an email support address for Mozilla. One clue from Mozilla says T-bird version should be 38 or newer to work with Gmail. My T-bird says it is 2 and when I check for updates says none available. I just DLed and started using this one less than a year ago. Up till a week or two ago it worked fine with Gmail. I guess I'll have to replace T-bird with another enmail ap. Not Gmail or Eudora. Any suggestions to make it work or what to replace it with? TIA -- I love a good meal! That's why I don't cook. |

TIA You can have any Tbird you want. http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/thun...0/win32/en-US/ Thunderbird Setup 52.0.exe 38M 03-Apr-2017 15:51 Now, that being said *be really careful*. Thunderbird can bring a profile forward. You can go from 2.0.0.19 to 52.0. But you can't go backwards afterwards. Reinstalling 2.0.0.19 after running 52.0 once, the old version isn't going to know what to do with the newer version files and setup. It *might* end up being a mess. This requires that you locate the two places Thunderbird stores files and make copies of stuff. I regularly back up my "data" folder (it's close to 1GB now), but not the other one. If transferring Thunderbird somewhere, you might consider backing up both folders if you can find them. One way to do it, would be to back up the entire C:, do some messing about, decide you don't like the results, and restore from backup. That requires less knowledge of the details. In Account Settings : Local Folders, there is a /path for where your data profile is stored. So that's a start. C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\1234abcd.default\ C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Thunderbird profiles.ini [General] StartWithLastProfile=1 [Profile0] Name=default IsRelative=1 Path=Profiles/1234abcd.default So that's how it knows the profile name, using profiles.ini. Then you can search on 1234abcd-type number, to spot the materials. I could find profile names like 1234abcd.default in these places on WinXP. C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles The third path would be the Program Files folder, which you can use Add/Remove in Control Panels for installing or removing versions etc. ******* https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/th...-requirements/ Windows Operating Systems Windows XP SP3 Windows Server 2003 SP1 Windows Server 2003 R2 Windows Server 2008 Windows Server 2008 R2 Windows Vista Windows 7 Windows 8 Windows 10 Please note that while the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7 can be used to run Thunderbird, only 32-bit builds of Thunderbird are supported at this time. Note that Thunderbird 52 is the last release to support Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows 2008 and Windows Vista. I wouldn't cut the release too close to the limit, as plugin support got modified at some point during 52ESR. Perhaps selecting an early (52.0) is good enough for your purposes. Just be careful not to zorch something :-) Thunderbird is an asynchronous pig, that loves to pester you about compacting your folders. Enjoy! Or something... I'm not that fond of Thunderbird! What about another email ap other tham Gmail? I mainly use it as a backup for daily Gmail email messages to my sister who also uses Gmail who wishes me to send them to ease her mind. Sending emails with Gmail has failed in the past - thus the backup.I used to use Eudora but it quit working too a year or two ago. Someone elsewere suggested Opera? I'm begining to think this may be a major problem with my XP. And I'd prefer to continue using XP. TIA When you log into GMail on the web and check the settings, is "less secure application" still enabled ? As that's what allows Thunderbird to log in. ******* There are a couple tools which are "software suites" with more than one function inside. I'm using an older version of Opera (12.16), and I wouldn't say it's that wonderful for email. It still feels like using a web browser to do mail. Thunderbird still "feels" like an email client (three pane view, no monkey business). Later versions of Opera are based on Chrome code. And Chrome stops at V49 or so on WinXP, so at some point the "newer" Opera should be a problem too. http://ftp.opera.com/ftp/pub/opera/win/ http://ftp.opera.com/ftp/pub/opera/win/1216/en/ I don't know why I downloaded this, but it's in my download history. The Chrome it's based on is getting pretty close to the end of WinXP era. So this (if the download is still there) would be the newest Opera you could get and test on WinXP, at a guess. https://download3.operacdn.com/pub/o...0.65_Setup.exe https://blogs.opera.com/desktop/2016...130-65-update/ "Chromium is updated to version 49.0.2623.110" Seamonkey would contain some of the code that Thunderbird uses, so should have some similarities. But it would be in the "less secure" (Google terminology) realm and need the setting in "GMail settings" to function. It shows 2.49 when you visit the site from WinXP at least. http://www.seamonkey-project.org/ Google uses OAuth2 as an authentication protocol. Which is a web protocol glued onto email clients. It was a hard sell for the Thunderbird designers at the time, since it's a coupling of something "somewhat incompatible" with how email clients work. As a result, the GMail "less secure application" setting allows older clients without OAuth2 support, to work properly. Paul |

Are you saying that your Sent messages are not being delivered by Gmail or just that a copy appears in your Inbox? If the latter it is a simple TB setting which you must have changed by mistake. They are not being delivered TO Gmail. Gmail returns them. Thunderbird would work, all the way up to the version based on Firefox 52ESR. Thunderbird is actually a copy of Firefox (about 90 percent of the tarball of the source is Firefox code). The development process consists of dragging in the latest Firefox code, then pouring in the Thunderbird code and making it work "on top of" a new XUL.dll engine. So rather than Firefox being a "software suite" like some of the other softwares, the "second feature" is implemented as a separate package. Think of it as a "suite broken into pieces" in a sense. The hardest part, is finding the "timeline chart" for each software product, which contains info showing (perhaps) the last version that runs in WinXP. I've had some softwares here, where I tested version after version after version (Wireshark)... because the idiots refused to label which one was the last one for certain OSes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Histor...la_Thunderbird 52.9.1 Thunderbird 52.9.1 10 July 2018 Official version 52.9.1 release. Last release to support Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows 2008 and Windows Vista. http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/thun...1/win32/en-US/ Thunderbird Setup 52.9.1.exe 38M 10-Jul-2018 18:01 According to the chart, that should work. However, I don't know which release had problems with plugins. That should "eat" your profile OK, but if you want to go back to 2.0.0.24, that step could be a problem. And besides, "everyone should learn how to back up their Thunderbird profile" :-) I don't know how many times that's saved my ass. The Mork file format doesn't really "feel" all that stable. The article on backing up profiles here, is suitably confusing, but mentions Mozbackup. There are two problems with the third party program. It's no longer supported. And links to copies of the program stored all over the place, contain adware. The author of the program still maintains his own site. If you can find "profiles.ini", then you can likely locate the chunk with your Email and USENET files in it. I zip that one up for safe keeping, for doing repairs to the data files when needed (the profile below profiles.ini - the profiles.ini can be opened with Notepad). http://kb.mozillazine.org/Backing_up...and_setti ngs Paul |

******* https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/th...52.7.0/system- requireme nt s/ Windows Operating Systems Windows XP SP3 Windows Server 2003 SP1 Windows Server 2003 R2 Windows Server 2008 Windows Server 2008 R2 Windows Vista Windows 7 Windows 8 Windows 10 Please note that while the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7 can be used to run Thunderbird, only 32-bit builds of Thunderbird are supported at this time. I would have a more positive attitude if they didn't keep messing with it. "Messing with it" is when software gets in your face, that's my definition. Paul I'm not that fond of Thunderbird! What about another email ap other tham Gmail? And I'd prefer to continue using XP. TIA If you are using XP it should have Outlook Express installed. I use that on several XP VMs and it works fine with Gmail. I'll check into that. How do I find my incoming and outgoing email server names and types? Need this to set up Outlook Express. Where can I look? Google your server web sites and you should find the config information. |

If you've been using Thunderbird (until it decided to fail), they will be shown in there - under Account Settings I think. (Some of the terms used may be different.) Note that TB stores its incoming and outgoing settings in different places. [] They have a video here, but I'm not a big fan of videos when you're trying to set stuff up. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...bird-and-gmail https://i.postimg.cc/cJsYYhJf/email-...ew-details.gif The IMAP/POP3 section for outgoing, would be in the specific account section. The SMTP might be held separately on the screen, near the left column, at the bottom. Here's an IMAP for gmail. https://prod-cdn.sumo.mozilla.net/up...-42-e28e12.png The SMTP are in a table here. At one time, you would only use your ISPs SMTP (port 25), but these are showing the usage of the email service SMTP on port 465 (encrypted). https://prod-cdn.sumo.mozilla.net/up...-47-62558f.png You can enter the "account details" when running the new version of Thunderbird and then verify the settings afterwards when the account is showing in the left pane. Use the auto-setup in other words, but still verify whether the details are the same as before. Paul |
