XP Search question
In all the years I used XP, i have never understood why the SEARCH
feature says "search for people". What the heck is that for? There are no people inside my computer, just files...... I always thought this was some sort of joke created by MS..... |

I always thought this was some sort of joke created by MS..... There aren't any files inside your computer either; there's a hard disc with 1s and 0s on it, or at least electronics that makes magnetic domains appear as 1s and 0s. However, the OS presents them as what we have come to call "files" ... Similarly, you _may_ have an "Address Book". I've never _used_ the "search for people" function (in fact I can't remember ever using the inbuilt search function at all; I use "Everything"), but I'm guessing maybe it searches that? -- J. P. XP Search question
John, AP,
but I'm guessing maybe it searches that? It does (just verified to make sure). (AP, thats the address book in OE you get when you create a new email and click the "to", "Cc" or "Bcc" book-like icon. Also see start - programs - accessories - address book). But its just the first target available under the "look in" dropdown box. If-and-when you have an "Active Directory" set up (not something a home user will often do) than you can also search for people you share that AD with. As for the other three "Internet Directory" ones (Bigfoot, VeriSign and WhoWhere) ? I have never used them and do not even know what they are for. Sorry. .... but you /could/ have googled the question with either of the three types. I threw [XP "find people" "address book"] and got a few usable hits on even the first page. :-) So no, it isn't a(n inside) joke. I do however question why its a "windows explorer" option. Than again, "windows explorer" will also happily go online when you put an URL into its "address" inputbox or go use its "default search provider" to do the same when you put something in there which it doesn't readily understand. :-( Regards, Rudy Wieser |

I tried it, did not like it, and have used other email software since. So, I now know why that "search for people" function is useless. As for the person who suggested I use Google, I do not come to newsgroups to use Google. If google solves all of your life's issues, dont even bother coming to the newsgroups. I also DO NOT use Google. Google is one of the worst as far as tracking user, and spamming people with ads. If you dont want your privacy stolen, avoid Google, Facebook, and Amazon. Those are the 3 worst sites on the web. |
