Insufficient access to your computer to connect to selected printe
Hello,
I work for a school and am having the below problem sporadically in various computer labs. At login, we use a script that executes net use commands to connect to the appropriate printers for individual users. Sometimes the printers are not added correctly, but no error is given at login. We have placed an icon on the desktop which is just a shortcut to \\computername\printername that students can use to install a printer if it didn't auto-install at login. But occassionally when the printers don't automatically install and students try to connect to the printer with this icon they get the message "You do not have sufficient access to your computer to connect to the selected printer." The weird part is that if they click the icon again and again, eventually it will work - they connect to the printer and are able to use it. Sometimes clicking it a 2nd time works, sometimes it takes up to 10 times, but eventually they are able to connect to the printer. In my research I have seen references to the "Prevent users from installing printer drivers" setting in local security policy which is disabled. I have also seen that people get this error when they do not have access to the spool directory, or they are not power users, neither of which is the case. We will see this in a computer lab sometimes for days or weeks at a time, then it will disappear and return again weeks later. It won't happen to all of the labs at the same time. The printers are HP Laserjet 3500n and 3600n models. We have been having some trouble with their drivers recently which may be related. I have tried removing all users from the security settings on the printer share and readding them. Any ideas what would cause this and why it would be intermittant? Thanks! Mark W |

Does that article apply only when connecting to the server by RDP?
The print server is Windows 2003, the clients are XP. "Prevent users from installing printer drivers" is disabled on the client machines and enabled on the server. Thanks! Insufficient access to your computer to connect to selected printer
I was experiencing the same problem with Windows XP. No mater what I did to fix this problem nothing work.
What did work: 1.) Log on to the computer as an administrator. 2.) Go to Printers and Faxes. 3.) Under the file menu, select server properties. 4.) Click on the drivers tab. 5.) Delete all of the network printer drivers. 6.) Log off and back on as a normal user. Once I deleted all of the network printer drivers, I was able to log back on the computer as a normal user and add the network printers without any problems.
