Need Help: Mouse Driver for Windows XP PS/2 mouse

My son's computer has somehow lost the ps/2 mouse function. The mouse
arrow appears on the screen at bootup, but it cannot be moved. Mouse
OK, tried several mice, same problem.

When looking in the CONTROL PANEL, MOUSE PROPERTIES, HARDWARE,
there is nothing in the DEVICES NAME white box, in other words
it appears the mouse driver is missing or uninstalled.

I suspect he got some kind of malware, but not sure.

Can anyone steer me right on how to re-install the mouse
drivers WITHOUT A MOUSE on the system? Or will he have
to do a WINDOWS REPAIR or complete re-install?

Any help appreciated.

A mouse does not need a driver. By default, a mouse will use Windows'
own built-in mouse driver. You might install additional mouse drivers,
to give your mouse extra capabilities. However, any mouse will work with
no additional software installed.

If the mouse pointer appears during Windows startup, that means the
mouse is working. To check this, start the computer in Safe Mode. Does
the mouse work? If it does, there's nothing wrong with the mouse or with
your computer.

Let's be sure about something: a PS/2 mouse uses a wire. So, we're
talking about a wired mouse, correct?

Try this: Start the computer in Safe Mode. Go to Device Manager (Start
Control Panel System Hardware tab Device Manager button) and
double-click on 'Mice and other pointing devices'. Double-click on
whatever mouse is listed, then click on the Driver tab. Click on the
Uninstall button, confirm the scary-sounding message, close Device
Manager and restart your computer normally.

If you don't see a mouse listed, look in Device Manager for 'Unknown
device' or words to that effect - there will be an icon with a yellow
exclamation mark.

During re-start, Windows will recognize that a mouse is attached and
supply its own driver.

Standard PS/2 mouse, corded. Tried several known good ones, no luck.

WSell, we tried everything and it did not work in the SAFE mode
either.

Looking at the HID MOUSE in the System Hardware Driver section, all
shows as normal, latest driver installed after trying update.
It shows the HID mouse is operating normally (which it is not).

As last resort, plugged in a USB mouse and it worked just fine,
so we will use that for now.

I suspect either the PS/2 mouse port itself is bad or a file is
corrupted somewhere. ALways open to other suggestions.

Yes, I was going to suggest the socket itself is faulty. Probably
nothing you can in practice do, if that _is_ the cause of the problem,
as they're soldered to the motherboard: if you're competent, you _could_
go over the solder joints, but that would mean taking the motherboard
out, which I'd say is not worth the hassle. (If you have a PS/2 mouse
you're attached to, you can get USB to PS/2 adapters - plug into a USB,
and give you usually the two PS/2 sockets, mouse and keyboard. [in fact
I think I've seen ones that give a full complement of the old connectors
- PS/2 x 2, serial, and parallel.]) Pity really, as a PS/2 mouse uses a
socket that otherwise isn't used for anything, whereas a USB one uses up
a USB one (and doesn't work in DOS).

Yes, I was going to suggest the socket itself is faulty. Probably
nothing you can in practice do, if that _is_ the cause of the problem,
as they're soldered to the motherboard: if you're competent, you _could_

Well, we did not try to do what you said, UNINSTALL then let it
re-install itself. After we got the USB mouse working, the son did
not want to try again with the PS/2 mouse.

I think you are correct, the driver is corrupted somwhere, and maybe
the uninstall, re-install would do the job, but son is happy now and
wants to "let sleeping dogs lie". If it was me, I would not let them
lie.... he he..

Well, we did not try to do what you said, UNINSTALL then let it
re-install itself. After we got the USB mouse working, the son did
not want to try again with the PS/2 mouse.

I think you are correct, the driver is corrupted somwhere, and maybe
the uninstall, re-install would do the job, but son is happy now and
