How to boot to a CD_ROM in Win 98 SE
I am planning to donate my Win 98 SE and have downloaded and burned
Darik Boot and Nuke disk eraser to a CD-R. In order to access the DBAN application the PC must be booted from the CD_ROM. I have not used the PC for many years and cannot remember (if I ever knew) how to have the PC boot to the CD-ROM drive. I started the PC and hit F1 which took me to Setup and from there I selected Boot and saw that the CD-Rom was listed first so I selected it and hit Enter and then exit. However, this is not apparently how one changes the boot order, because when I start the PC it opens the Windows 98 SE operating system in the normal fashion. Can anysone assist this dummy? TIA |

Double check the BIOS settings you changed. If that dosnt work get a "universal boot floppy" that will send instruction to the CD rom to boot whatever it finds there. Can anysone assist this dummy? TIA you cannot just copy the files you need an iso image and then you need to select "burn image" from your cd burning software or else take the bootable cd option |

How to boot to a CD_ROM in Win 98 SE
I am attempting to start (boot) my old Win 98 to the CR-Rom drive in order to run the HDD eraser DBAN program which is saved on a CD-ROM as required by the DBAN user instructions. However all attempts to change the boot order have failed to date. How to boot to a CD_ROM in Win 98 SE
As indicated the DBAN application has been burned to a CD_ROM from the DBAN web page and in order to run the application one must boot from the CD and not from Windows. There is no USB involved in the operation. Frank On Wed, 29 Feb 2012 14:24:38 -0500, Zaphod Beeblebrox wrote: In article , says... Plus there are other software that does the same thing. And one of the best ways to connect that drive up to another computer and wipe it clean there. That way you don't have to do that boot thing either. -- Bill Gateway M465e ('06 era) - OE-QuoteFix v1.19.2 Centrino Core Duo T2400 1.83GHz - 2GB - Windows XP SP3 |

How to boot to a CD_ROM in Win 98 SE
Perhaps my inability to boot from the CD_ROM which contains the DBAN
application is that I do not know how to properly change the boot order in the BIOS. I have been accessing the BIOS from the Setup menu, but I have not found a way to have the CD_ROM boot instead of Windows 98SE hard drive. There is no way to enable the CD_ROM and disable the hard drive in the Setup Boot menu selections. Is there another way to access the BIOS where selections and priorities can be made? True, but if the BIOS doesn't recognize the USB drive, nothing is ever going to boot from it. If this machine was built in the Windows 98 era, I don't see any BIOS to notice any USB drive. This generally isn't a problem for newer machines though. |

How to boot to a CD_ROM in Win 98 SE
Thanks to all responders. I have read the suggestions and have hit a
brick wall. Perhaps my inability to boot from the CD_ROM which contains the DBAN application is that I do not know how to properly change the boot order in the BIOS. There is no way to enable the CD_ROM and disable the hard drive in the Setup Boot menu selections. I have selected the CD-ROM and moved it to the top of the list and hit F10 which is supposed to exit and save, but that does not work nor does starting the PC with the CD_ROM in the drive. Is there another way to access the BIOS where selections and priorities can be made? Anyway on my Gateway and Asus machines, besides the BIOS setup hotkey to get into there. There is another hotkey you can press instead. And for both, it is the ESC key and it pops up a boot menu and lists all devices that the BIOS can see. And there you can select which one will boot this time only. Not all machines use this hotkey. Nor not all machines have this boot menu either. -- Bill Gateway M465e ('06 era) - OE-QuoteFix v1.19.2 Centrino Core Duo T2400 1.83GHz - 2GB - Windows XP SP3 |
