How to boot to a CD_ROM in Win 98 SE

Perhaps my inability to boot from the CD_ROM which contains the DBAN application is that I do not know how to properly change the boot order in the BIOS. I have been accessing the BIOS from the Setup menu, but I have not found a way to have the CD_ROM boot instead of Windows 98SE hard drive. There is no way to enable the CD_ROM and disable the hard drive in the Setup Boot menu selections. I have selected the CD-ROM and moved it to the top of the list and hit F10 which is supposed to exit and save, but that does not work nor does starting the PC with the CD_ROM in the drive. If you've already configured the machine so that CD boot is a higher priority than HD boot, then the next step is to make sure you have a bootable CD. You wouldn't be the first person who unsuccessfully burned a bootable CD. Try a store-bought bootable CD and see if that boots, like a Windows installation CD or similar. |

In order to access the DBAN application the PC must be booted from the CD_ROM. I have not used the PC for many years and cannot remember (if I ever knew) how to have the PC boot to the CD-ROM drive. I started the PC and hit F1 which took me to Setup and from there I selected Boot and saw that the CD-Rom was listed first so I selected it and hit Enter and then exit. However, this is not apparently how one changes the boot order, because when I start the PC it opens the Windows 98 SE operating system in the normal fashion. Can anysone assist this dummy? Seems like you probably do have it set correctly - try Char's advice elsethread to see if you can boot to a store-bought bootable CD (like a Windows installation CD). If so, then the problem is the DBAN CD you made is not bootable and needs to be re-burned. Is there another way to access the BIOS where selections and priorities can be made? Depends on the make & model of PC. Some have windows based utilities that can make BIOS settings changes. -- Zaphod The secret of flying is to hurl yourself to the ground, and miss. |
