The Windows 10 May 2020 Update is finally now released 5/27/2020
o The Windows 10 May 2020 Update is now out
https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/windows-10-may-2020-update-now-available/ o The most significant update comes to File Explorer o There is also a new Cortana experience o and the ability to rename virtual desktops o Other improvements include an enhanced Windows search function To download the May 2020 Update today... o Open Windows Settings, clicking Update & Security, Windows Update followed by Check for Updates. o If it is ready for your PC, you will see a message appear under Optional Updates available in Windows Update, of 'Feature update to Windows 10, version 2004' o You can then trigger a download of it by clicking Download and install now To force an update if you do not see that message... o Go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 o Download the Media Creation Tool "MediaCreationTool2004.exe" https://software-download.microsoft.com/download/pr/MediaCreationTool2004.exe o You can then use that tool to download a bootable ISO file. It's always a ton of bull**** in the reviews, but let's see what they say. o What's new in the Windows 10 May 2020 Update https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2020/05/27/whats-new-in-the-windows-10-may-2020-update/ o Bluetooth pairing is fewer steps o you can sign in with your face, fingerprint, or PIN? o kaomoji available directly in the Windows emoji keyboard o Name your desktops instead of Desktop 1 or Desktop 2 o DirectX 12 Ultimate o Xbox Game Bar now supports third-party widgets o memory usage reduction of up to 27% when browsing with Microsoft Edge o now you can choose to keep the Calculator app on top of everything o NotePad.exe wrap around find/replace, quick text zooming o NotePad.exe asterisk in the title bar indicates unsaved changes o place, receive, or text reply to phone calls directly on your PC o Cortana chat-based user interface o Narrator sounds have been revamped o Windows Magnifier will keep the text cursor in the center of the screen etc. The phone sync appears to require a separate app: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/sync-across-your-devices?activetab=pivot_1%253aprimaryr2 "Users must link their phone to their Windows PC in PC settings. Users will receive an app from Microsoft which they must download to their phone and follow the set-up prompts, including being signed into [the] same Microsoft Account across mobile apps and Windows 10 PC." Apparently they're billing WSL2 as part of this update o Even though you can get it separately, as we covered he o Tutorial for setting up Ubuntu as a Windows Subsystem for Linux WSL in Windows 10 https://groups.google.com/d/msg/alt.comp.freeware/rOT8xBWo9dk/pK8Z8ahDAgAJ This is where they link the WSL2 with this new update: o Windows 10 May 2020 Update now available with built-in Linux kernel and Cortana updates https://www.theverge.com/2020/5/27/21271655/microsoft-windows-10-may-2020-update-download-available "Microsoft¢s next major Windows 10 update includes WSL 2" "The biggest change to the May 2020 Update is that it includes the Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL 2), with a custom-built Linux kernel." "WSL 2 won't include Linux GUI application support or GPU hardware acceleration just yet, as Microsoft is promising both of these features for future Windows updates." o Microsoft is bringing Linux GUI apps to Windows 10 https://www.theverge.com/2020/5/19/21263377/microsoft-windows-10-linux-gui-apps-gpu-acceleration-wsl-features As always, please improve so that all benefit from every article posted. -- Usenet is a polite public potluck of purposefully helpful advice. |

It's an Upgrade, because the release number of the OS
changes, as do the release number stamps on the majority of OS files. I just tried to upgrade my 1909 by Windows10Upgrade9252.exe, after few seconds it says "System is updated" but when I try winver command it shows 1909. Now I'm trying the MediaCreationTool2004.exe to make a usb key and I found in this tool "update this machine" option, maybe I should try to use it... ** Paul ^Bart |

It's an Upgrade... Hi Paul, Thanks for that well-meant correction, where, in my defense, I'll only state I was parroting the title of the first article referenced. Moving forward, I'll try to use "upgrade" for the Win10 2004 rollout! o I actually appreciate the admonishment - as we should use proper terms. The one later in the year, if any, is a "tick box upgrade", where in many cases, the release numbers are mixed. In your existing OS, you can see a mixture of 18362 (Major) and 18363 (Minor). Currently, on this desktop, I'm at: Win+R winver 18363.836 Accordingly, I've obtained the requisite tool & ISO which awaits install: Name: MediaCreationTool2004.exe Size: 19468312 bytes (18 MiB) SHA256: E230E99A0836C468F8CA98FBE0CEDB7B73CE88229409035D1E 5353B88397A781 Name: Windows.iso Size: 4144168960 bytes (3952 MiB) SHA256: 35C8CA4D9943BC614BD2ECFE569E459BE5873B2B02FF3E5ABE EB6EAF6CB23A5B Cortana has been relegated to a janitorial room in the basement of the Microsoft building. Your job is to find where they've hidden Cortana, as an Easter Egg. For whatever reason, they seem to be making a big deal about Cortana... o Microsoft continues its productivity-aide push with the new Cortana app for Windows 10 2004 https://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-continues-its-productivity-aide-push-with-the-new-cortana-app-for-windows-10-2004/ "Microsoft is rolling out its new standalone Cortana productivity-aide app and updating its Cortana app with new features on iOS, simultaneous with the Windows 10 2004 rollout." "This new, separate Cortana app, available for Windows 10 starting with this feature update, is all about using natural language (voice or typing activated) to handle more productivity tasks." I turned off Cortana so long ago that I don't even know what it is anymore. o Same thing with those binary tiled menus & even the alphabetical menu. I didn't see much by way of useful stuff in those Windows Upgrade reviews. o Did you? Remember long ago when I authored this question about Windows? o What can you do on Windows 10 that you can't do on Windows XP or Windows 7? https://groups.google.com/d/msg/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general/fJBY472ds3E/W539WlUTAwAJ Something like 40 people in something like 400 posts could barely find a dozen useful things you couldn't do way back in the older releases, that were claimed to be inside the newest release (at that time). What's changed since then? o I think almost all mature software follows a similar functionality curve. In general, most "reviews" are simply "shills" provided by MARKETING to the various organizations to hand them ready-made "news" about the product, IMHO. Having read the posted reviews, I didn't find much by way of usefulness. o Did you? -- I turned off Cortana so long ago that I don't even know what it is anymore. |

Yours should be bigger, as typically the Linux-downloaded-one has 11 OS versions, and the MediaCreationTool one has 7 OS versions. Quite why they do this, I don't understand the motivation. It means a Linux user would need dual layer DVD9 media to hold that ISO. Whereas the one Arlen got, should fit on single layer media. It's also possible to remaster the ISO and remove the versions you don't want (for either of the 7-OS or 11-OS versions). Paul |

I'm still trying to get a DVD burned, where I have a dead desktop just waiting to get a new HDD and this 2004 Windows 10 edition... Looking for "what" is in the edition, there 'ain't much I fear... For example... o Windows 10 May 2020 update brings WSL 2, revamped Cortana assistant, and Your Phone calls to ARM devices https://www.xda-developers.com/microsoft-windows-10-may-2020-update-wsl-2-revamped-cortana-assistant-your-phone-calls-arm-devices/ "The latest version of Windows 10, is now receiving the May 2020 stable update, which brings several key features such as... (1) Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) 2 (2) a revamped Cortana experience, (3) Your Phone feature for Windows on ARM, (4) and more" [see below for the andmore stuff] "As part of this update, WSL 2 is also now updateable through Windows Update, so users no longer need to rely on the command line only to update the kernel." "Microsoft did announce GPU acceleration and Linux GUI app support for WSL 2, at Microsoft Build 2020. But, these features are not yet available even for Windows Insiders" "Another highlight of this Windows 10 version update is the new Cortana experience, which now takes the form of a chat" "The Your Phone app lets you place, receive, or text reply to incoming phone calls from your PC. Previously, this feature only worked if you had a supported Android device and an x86/x86-64 Windows 10 PC." "Other smaller features in this update include: (4) Faster Bluetooth pairing (5) More kaomoji available within the Windows emoji keyboard (6) Virtual desktops can now be named. (7) The Xbox Game Bar now supports third-party widgets (8) Memory improvements in Microsoft Edge (9) The Calculator app can now float on top of other windows (10) Notepad updated with wrap-around find/replace (11) Notepad updated with quick text zooming (12) Notepad updated to show when the file has unsaved changes" -- Most mature software hits a hurdle where everything new is nothing new. |

But I haven't backed it up yet (too big). Is there any way to "repair" the bad HDD given this circumstance: 1. When I put the bad HDD in the bad desktop, it won't boot. 2. However, when I put the bad HDD in a good desktop, it shows up. (I did NOT set it as the boot disk though.) 3. How can I 'repair' that bad HDD using this new 2004 Windows 10 disc? Can I do this? a. Put the bad HDD in the bad desktop and boot to the 2004 Win10 disc. b. Then "repair" the bad HDD without losing the data outside of Windows? If I can't, then I have to buy a new HDD and then I know it will work. -- Sometimes, it takes advice from others to figure out the best action. |
