Default Internet works for wifi, not for wired desktop

Internet works for wifi, not for wired desktop

On top of every other problem, last night the internet went out for my
desktop (the one that crashes all the time).

But the wifi still works for the laptop.

I've checked the cables to and from the box on my desk and to the
network port on the computer. Nothing has changed.

This is Verizon FIOS, Fiber Optic. I'll call them if you don't know
the answer but now there is a lawnmower making a lot of noise.

It has 3 boxes, one outside, one in the next room with a lot of lights,
al (or many)l of which are on, and a tall thin thing on my desk that has
two white lights, as normal. One looks like the map of the world and
the other has concentric parentheses marks, each one bigger than t he
next (Is there a name for that?)

I pressed what might be a reset button (it has 2 curved arrows, making a
circle) and after a bunch of blinking and turning red, it's back to 2
white lights

Sounds like a WPS sync button rather than reset, just makes it easier to
connect devices to wifi without them asking for a password

The lawnmower stopped and I called verizon. They'e computer sort of
understood the problem and it rebooted the whachamacallit, the ont, the
lights on the thing on my desk flashed, but it's no different from
before. A person will call me back when they finish the people ahead of
me, in an hour or two.

Now because of the virus, they say, they are only open 9 or 10 to 7 m-f
and -5 Sat I don't get it. Don't these people work at home anyhow, or
if not, why is it less safe to come in at night? Surely they don't
spend 14 hours each night cleaning for the virus.

I can't remember if the wifi originates in the middle box, the ont , or
the thing on my desk.

What does "ipconfig" in Command Prompt show now ?

If ipconfig is configured for the wired connection, it would
suggest that DHCP to the router managed to communicate.

*******

To get to Control Panels in Windows 10, right click Start, use the
Run box and run "control" or "control.exe".

In the Control Panels is Troubleshooters. Try the network troubleshooter.

*******

Check your Device Manager. It's in the right-click of Start.

See if there are any yellow marks on network devices.

Dumb questiom: Did a glich some way disable the wired internet connection?

Control Panel, Network and Internet, Network Connections
Right click Icon to see if it is enabled.

Things like this happen to me because of mouse dribble. (Randomm
unintended mouse clickes)

In that case, the ONT is good. Period. The ONT doesn't know the difference
between WiFi and wired Ethernet.

The router, on the other hand, is still in play, but not likely to be the
culprit.

With no specific information to go on and just using experience, my
thoughts go to the NIC on the desktop PC, the Ethernet cable, the TCP/IP
configuration on the PC, and lastly the router.

Does the desktop PC connection status tell you it's Disconnected, or does
it give you the name of your router? As someone else suggested, if you open
a Command Prompt, what does "ipconfig /all" tell you? If you don't know
what to look for, copy/paste the output here and someone will tell you what
to do next.

Also, sooner or later, you're going to have to provide the make and model
of the mystery boxes with lights so that people aren't forced to guess.

fios-quantum-gateway

i don't think verizon provides the older actiontec anymore.

I have found this to be a common problem with touchpads (normal on
laptops). I usually disable the touchpad and use an external device.

Hi Micky,

Follow everyone elses suggestions first, especially Paul's.

I had a customer with this problem once. Could only
connect to the Internet with their WiFi. They
could connect to the router's configuration just
fine. Turned out it was their new, carppy Netgear
router at fault.

Here is a test to see if it is the router:

0) make sure you are not logging into someone else's WiFi
(I see this all the time). Good test: power off your
router and see if the WiFi still works.

The following is valid only is you are able to surf
with your WiFi

1) open a cmd prompt

2) run "ipconfig /all" and find your default router
also called "gateway". This is the address to your
router.

3) "ping router_IP" to see if it works. If not,
something is wrong at your end (make sure you did
not goof the IP address).

4) if the ping works, open a web browser and go to the
router's IP address. If you don't get a log on screen,
then something is wrong at your end (make sure you did
not goof the IP address). If you get a log on prompt
for the router, then get a new router.

better test: check which ssid it's using.

with your WiFi

1) open a cmd prompt

2) run "ipconfig /all" and find your default router
also called "gateway". This is the address to your

it's much easier to check the network settings.

but even that is usually not needed since the gateway is normally .1 in
whatever ip block the lan is using, usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1,
sometimes a 10.*.*.* block.

3) "ping router_IP" to see if it works. If not,
something is wrong at your end (make sure you did
not goof the IP address).

or just load the router's admin page at the above address.

even easier, some routers respond to specific dns queries, such as
netgear and routerlogin.net, eliminating the need to know its ip
address.

4) if the ping works, open a web browser and go to the
router's IP address. If you don't get a log on screen,
then something is wrong at your end (make sure you did
not goof the IP address). If you get a log on prompt
for the router, then get a new router.

that is bad advice.

I don't think these things are loaded in safe mode. I would expect to
be able to get tot he settings using Control Panel anyhow, but no such
luck.

But Verizon called back after an hour or two and we went over the
problems.

I got the new router an 2 hours ago and I'll put it in some time today.
