Switching from Safe to Normal mode and back again: Diagnostic Mode

Is there really no easier way to switch from regular mode to Safe mode
or the other way around,, except by fully logging into windows, then
using MSCONFIG, changing it and restarting windows?

Seems to me there should be a way to choose at the start, and with prior
versions, if I had a crash, the next time windows started it gave me the
choise of normal startup, safe mode, save mode with internet, cmd
screen, etc. Now it just lets me start again

Also, I set msconfig for Diagnostic Startup, because it was placed
between Full and Selective and diagnosis seemed like a good thing but
after restart it was in Safe mode anyhow!!

I have only used MSCONFIG to switch to Safe Mode to test something. I
never use this frequently.

It has been some time since I needed to do it but at that time I was
able to get to the safe mode

This is what my notes say, regarding the
black boot menu window with the F8 option
for Windows 10.

*******

F8 boot menu for Windows 10:

dir /AH C:\boot\BCD # verify it is there.

bcdedit /store C:\boot\BCD /set {bootmgr} displaybootmenu True

*******

That's obviously an emergency repair, done from an installer DVD
booted up and using the COmmand Prompt in the Troubleshooting section.

The command is an offline command, pointed at a specific boot materials
on a Windows 10 setup.

Using some of the terms from the command, I can give a link where
someone explains it better.

This explained it j ust fine and it worked with only two steps, 3 if you
count disabling fast boot.

Thank you so much. How do you know all these things?. I googled and
didn't find anything. Rather, I found statemnts that F8 was gone
from win10, or that some manufacturers disabled it, or that shift F8
might work (it didn't.) But it's not gone, it's just not the default.

And why shouldn't it be the default. It woudn't show up unles someone
pressed F8 and it's watching for keystrokes anyhow.

I would give the two steps but even my laptop is a problem and I can't
reload that page.

This doesn't solve my problems, doesn't find the bad driver if that's
it, but at least it saves time.

I don't rmemeber non-fast boot taking so long but I can set it back
later.

It's all luck.

I keep a notes file, but not nearly everything is in it.
Sometimes I find some breadcrumbs in there I feed into search.

All it takes is a single "right" kind of keyword, to
get a lucky result.

Search is almost as bad as using a Roulette wheel.

Here they are, option 1 of 2, the one I used:

Open an elevated command prompt or command prompt at boot.

To Enable F8 Advanced Boot Options screen in Windows 10

Type the command below in the command prompt, press Enter,

bcdedit /set {bootmgr} displaybootmenu yes

It gave a short message about completing normally. That's all it took,
except it said to disable fast boot so it did't boot so fast it went
past the time for pressing F8. I'm not sure I had to do that.

Well, I spoke too soon.

Since I did all this, the first time it brought up the startup choice
menu (safe mode, with internet, command. etc.) even though I hadn't
pressed F8, and thereafter, pressing F8 did nothing.

I had been in safe mode, using Anvir to remove most of the startup
programs, and I had to go to full startup to see if I removed the right
one. I hadn't. It crashed right away and it continues to crash often
even before totally loaded, so I can't use msconfig to reset the startup
method. I had high hopes for F8, I'll try shift-F8 but I only
found one reference to that and Im' not optiomistic.

Did you try Shift, by itself ?

The "thing" I had you do, was to bring up a legacy boot menu.
The boot menu should be rendering based on the contents
in System Reserved or so. At least I think it's there.
I would have to use TestDisk again, to discover where
everything is. Whatever Disk Management labels as "System"
is where the boot menu related stuff should come from.

In order to crash while the OS is booting, that should
happen after the boot menu. And in this case, the legacy
boot menu has an F8 option at the bottom part of the screen.

The command you issues and its effect, are volatile. In
the sense that endless attempts to reinstall, or attempts
to use any sort of Startup Repair, can remove the old BCD
and make a new one. A new one lacking the legacy boot menu
item you added.

Shift, no other key? I thought that didn't send anything.

I have tried Shift-F8 on two occasions, alternating with F8. but no
effect.

Hmm. I'll have to read the above and that page again.
