Corrupt thumbnails
I have been using the Properties--Customise feature to
select specific images for each folder when using the Thumbnails view in My Computer. Problem is that I now have random images being assigned to random folders, including such 'standard' folders as My Documents. When I go to Customise and click Restore Defaults, it simply changes to another, random image or set of images. Is there a fix for this that will restore my system to its default settings? I'm using Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633: Service Pack 1). Cheers, Craig |

Thumbnails created by using the customise dialog box store the picture =
path in the saved folder settings. This overrides the presence of a = folder.jpg in the folder, which in turn overrides a folder.bmp in the = folder. Having regard to customise dialog it is possible that your folder = settings are screwed. First delete the thumbs.db file in the parent folder (there you got your = specific answer), but for folder thumbnails I think it is actually = stored in the folder customised (but this could be because of that = stupid 4 images from a folder on an uncustomised one) so delete = thumbs.db there as well. Type hidden files in Help to see how. Also it is optional to store thumbnails. In folder options you can = choose to create every time or use stored ones. Tools - Folder Options - = View - Don't Cache Thumbnails. But as I said i think probably it is cross linked folder settings. I'll = give a short and long version of an answer. Short. =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D 90% of the time click Reset All Folders in Tools - Folder Options - = View. Customise dialog style thumbnails (as opposed to folder.jpg and = folder.bmp thumbnails) will vanish and need to be rechosen in the = customise dialog (dropping a picture called folder.jpg in the folder is = looking appealing now isn't it). Customise thumbnails aren't permanent = anyway. They will disappear if not accessed for a while if not cached. Reset only does half the job. If that doesn't work, type Regedit in = Start Run and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell NoRoam\BagMRU HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell NoRoam\Bags and delete. [Bags is the one that reset deletes, 90% of the time it is sufficient = but 10% of the time the BagMRU needs to be deleted too. If you know what = cross linked files are the same thing is happening here - the BagMRU = point to the wrong Bag or serveral BagMRU point to the same bag] There are some quirky things that sometime need a full setting reset. = Read the long answer. Just before the long answer, a final note in case you don't read till = the end. Folder settings are saved by the path used to access. I'm not sure how = this affects thumbnails, it doesn't if you are caching them as it gets = them from thumbs.db. Desktop\My Comp\C:\Documents & Settings\user name\My Docs\My Pics is a different setting to Desktop\My Comp\My Docs\My Pics Long =3D=3D=3D=3D The store may be corrupt. Type regedit in Start Run and delete all these = keys. Then read the last section carefully (Apply to All). Delete these keys or values from the registry. This will reset many = things like saved folder settings. Type Regedit in Start - Run Click Start - Turn Off Computer (or maybe Shutdown) - Ctrl + Alt + Shift = + click Cancel (or Close) (your Desktop and Start Menu now disappear). In Regedit navigate to each of these keys and delete them HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer and = delete the value Shellstate HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Cabi= netState and delete the value Settings HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Stre= ams HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Stre= amsMRU (may not exist) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell \BagMRU HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell \Bags HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell NoRoam\BagMRU HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell NoRoam\Bags [the above one is what reset deletes, 90% of the time it is sufficient = but 10% of the time the BagMRU needs to be deleted too. When I try either of the methods described by=20 Kelly in a previous post *OR* I use the right-click to=20 access the folder's properties and then select "restore=20 default", I don't get the default back. Surely someone can explain to me how XP stores this=20 thumbnail information for folders and how I can=20 therefore=20 restore it to factory settings, so to speak. Cheers, Craig. -----Original Message----- Right click the thumbnail. --=20 -------------------------------------------------------- - - 'Not happy John! Hi Kelly, Unfortunately neither of your options appears to have=20 made any difference to my thumbnails. Is there a file or a register somewhere that stores the=20 thumbnails that can be purged/emptied/reloaded? I have been using the Properties--Customise feature=20 to select specific images for each folder when using the Thumbnails view in My Computer. Problem is that I=20 now have random images being assigned to random folders, including such 'standard' folders as My Documents. =20 When I go to Customise and click Restore Defaults, it=20 simply changes to another, random image or set of images. Is there a fix for this that will restore my system=20 to its default settings? I'm using Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633: Service Pack 1). Cheers, Craig=20 . . . |
