Default SP2: Debatable Benefits

Succinctly, it's caused as much difficulty and incompatibility issues
as it's brought benefits. I recently attempted to play an older game I
have, which ran before SP2, but refuses to run now. There are a number
of similar such problems I've encountered. Anyone experience these type
issues?

No. You need to precisely describe what problems you are eXPerieincing
so that some thoughtful troubleshooting advice can be offered to help you.
All you are saying is you're having a problem without describing the problem
in detail.

No, it's not debatable. As with any "Platform" that essentially is raised
(SP2), you have to have updates & patches for those things that work
on the platform. Sorry you're having issues, but most if not all can be
resolved. No platform can continue to support every legacy application
and piece of hardware. It's a double-edged sword. Microsoft has to
move forward to support new technology, while at the same time trying
to allow as much older stuff to work on it as well.
Lot's of XP users have experienced problems with Service Pack 2.
Most of those users that expended some time & research probably resolved
those issues. Have you bothered to visit the game manufacturer's website
and check for an update or just stopped in here to "Stir the Pot".

I doubt it. You've had a few problems with things written before XP, go back
to the operating system it was written for. Or dual boot. Or look on your
unnamed game writers site for help. Or post some details. Otherwise
alt.moanandgroan.butdoingnothingabout.it seems a better newsgroup for you.

The game ('People's General') was released in August of '98. Shouldn't
XP/SP2 be compatible with games released for Windows 98? Any idea as to
how I can get it to run?

Or shouldn't the game be written to be compatible with the OS? Look on the
publishers site, email them.

Maybe the game is compatible with SP-2 and maybe not.
Have you tried Compatibility Mode:
Right click the game icon
Click Properties
Click Compatibility

There is a small number of programs that will not work and the manufacturer
is the source for that information.
Contact the game manufacturer or other users of that game for possible
solutions.

Problem solved. Thank you. What happened was I had tried compatibility
mode with a couple other games to no avail, and so this time figured it
would do the same.

For most people the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. If you are in the
minority and have something that you need to run that is not compatible
there are ways to use third party applications to get most of the same
benefits ay least as far as security is concerned. I always recommend using
SP2 if at all possible but I have clients where it is not and have found
ways to keep them secure. First and foremost is a good firewall. I prefer a
hardware firewall or Linux box. I also use a proxy server but this is
probably overkill. Next you have to make sure you still do all the IE and OE
related updates or use a different browser and email app. As with any
computer SP2 or not, install an antivirus and a couple of antispyware apps.

I see compatability mode worked for you. For future reference:
