Default defrag and scandisk

My ms xp scandisk and defrag stopped working.
MS Defrag said "disk defrag could not start"
MS error checking said "unable to complete disk check."
third party software like PC tools, the drives dont show up in the
defrag box.

The PC runs fine excpt for this defrag problem
and lost my MS private folders, folder became visible but still
encrypted.

Not enough info... but here are some of the things that can cause issues as
such:

1 - Defrag will not run if it doesn't have enough room on the disk.

2 - You have physical errors or File system errors.

3 - You may have software blocking the operations

4 - Registry permissions damage

There is no Scandisk in XP. You probably mean Chkdsk. Possibly you don't
have enough room on your hard drive for defrag to work. It's impossible to
give you focused help since you didn't provide enough information. Please
see the following links for what to include in your next post:

I also don't know what you mean by "lost my MS private folders". Perhaps you
mean the MS utility Private Folders that was discontinued by MS at least a
year ago (possibly longer).

I am using xp service pack 3
Its a 3 years old dell desktop xps 600
raid 1/500 gigs HD 200 Gigs free
2 gigs of ram
Standalone
I have zone alarm security suite
I don't think I have virus/malware
I connect with DSL
I don't know what changed its months between defrags.
I installed Netgrear VPN software that uses encryption
I can not run spin right it said the copy i have has been altered.
But I know it has not it works in ever other computer I have.

I ran the dell hard drive diagnosis program and it said "no errors"
I ran registry cleaners nothing found

yes it is MS utility Private Folders
Its used to work now it wont even install.

I can boot into safe mode and still can not defrag or error check

What's "it"? in it said your copy was altered?

Since you have no AV and probably no malware detection either, how can
you be so certain some application hasn't changed spinrite on you?
Which spinrite; the one from Gibson?

IMO you need an updated AV scan and your spyware arsenal thrown at it.
Then go from there.

But I know it has not it works in ever other computer I have.

Again, what is "it"?

I ran the dell hard drive diagnosis program and it said "no errors"

Doesn't sound like a hard drive issue, but that was still worth
eliminating.
Likewise with the registry; pretty unlikely you needed to do that.
Which registry cleaner/s did you use?

yes it is MS utility Private Folders

Again, what's "it"? According to your use of "it", "it" both worked and
didn't work ever.

What happens when you try to defrag? Is it grayed out, you get errors,
what?

You used registry cleaners so all bets are off. There is no way for me to
know what state your operating system is in now.

Do not use Private Folders; it was removed for a reason. If you want a free
encryption program, use TrueCrypt.

A. On the software side, I would remove ZoneAlarm first since it is known to
have many issues. You need to do this according to their special
instructions:

1. Go into ZA Overview/Preferences and uncheck "Load Zone Alarm on Startup".
2. Reboot computer to remove Zone Alarm drivers from memory.
3. Temporarily shut down any other AV/security programs.
4. Click on Start Programs Zone Labs. RIGHT-click on Uninstall Zone Labs
Security, then select Properties. Under Target you will see the following
line (the actual drive may be different on your system):

"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninstexe" - Change it to:
"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe" /clean /rmlicense (add a
space and then the /clean). Click OK to save.
Say "Yes" when being prompted for the removal of all files and allow
TrueVector to shut down. Reboot.

Now start in Safe Mode and delete these files in the Windows Directory:

WINDOWS\ Internet Logs
Program Files\Zone Labs
WINDOWS\system32\ Zonelabs

Now reboot into Regular Mode.

B. Still on the software side, I would make sure your computer is entirely
virus/malware-free:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware

C. If you can't run any of those programs or do the ZA uninstallation
because your operating system isn't working correctly, then:

a. Test the hard drive with a diagnostic utility downloaded from the drive
mftr.'s website. You will create a bootable CD with the file you download.
You will need third-party burning software to do this such as Roxio, Nero,
or the free CDBurnerXP Pro. Burn as an image, not as data.

http://www.cdburnerxp.se/

Boot with the CD you made and do a thorough test of the drive. If it fails
any physical tests, replace it.

b. If the hard drive tests good, back up your data and clean-install
Windows.

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...alling_Windows - What
you will need on-hand

Do not use registry cleaners again:

Default defrag and scandisk

Thank all of you helpful people.
After 3 months of trying all type of things to get my scandisk and
defrag to works again.
I have repaired it.
Zone alarm security suit and Ad-Aware has fail me.
It was a Trojan infection that stopped the proses.
Thanks to Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware it fix my problems.
