Default SP2 and Bluetooth

I have a friend who lives on a boat in Phuket, Thailand and his computer
dealer has warned him not to install SP2 because it will disable his
Bluetooth mobile telephone. Since that is his only form of communications
over there, he depends on it for internet access and telephone
communications.

So, he is very reluctant to upgrade to SP2. I would like to ask if anyone
has heard of a documented problem with Bluetooth and SP2 or is this just
another example of a lame-brained dealer no wanting to deal with the issues
of an O/S upgrade.

I still remember one of them warning of catastrophic events if I upgraded
from Win98SE to XP. I'm glad I didn't listen to him.

Thanks,

Tom

Btw, Bluetooth in mobile phones can be hacked and I would not suggest using
it. I have read about this in the Wall Street Journal.

I'm gonna go with the lame-brained dealer thing here.
SP2 actually includes a re-written Bluetooth stack what works quite well
from my experience. I would think that your friend would find the BT stack
in SP2 to be quite a step up.

It depends. If your friend uses the Bluetooth stack that it came with
the hardware's utility CD, probably by WIDCOMM, instead of the stack
that it came with SP1, he will have a lot of trouble installing SP2
over it. I had this trouble.

I would suggest to fully un-install the WIDCOMM software first before
to install SP2, but this isn't also a secure solution. MS-XP2
Bluetooth stack supports a lot less hardware and features that WIDCOMM
stack. And I don't know of a new WIDCOMM stack redesigned for SP2.
