Display owner of a folder, file, etc.
Hi comrades,
I'm running MS Windows XP SP3 on a single computer without network, domain, etc. The name of my computer is "NOTEBOOK-ROM". I have installed an administrative account "admin" and a few user normal acounts. Several folders and files of users and admin are not stored in "my documents" but in "common documents" readable for all users. The property "write protected" is not set. I suppose that another user but the owner or the admin can't change these files (rename, change content, etc.)) even they are are not write protected. To manege all these files I need is a better overview of who is the original creator or owner of these file in "common documents". When I display the owner of folders or files only the computer name "NOTEBOOK-ROM" is displayed, not e.g. "user1", "user2" or "admin". Is there a way to display the names of the file owners, i.e. the name of the original creator of a file who created the file under his account name? Thank you for your help. |

Display owner of a folder, file, etc.
Sorry VanguardLH, as I already mentioned in my question: when I select to
display the owner of a folder/file only the name of the machine is displayed, not the creator/owner as logged in with his account name, e.g "user1", "user2", etc., "VanguardLH" wrote: Frank Romeni wrote: MS Windows XP SP3 on a single computer without network, domain, etc. ... Looks like the Owner field shows the hostname\account for whomever current owns the file. You can add the Author field but nothing gets populated there unless you add that metadata to the file. Applications can add that data. Users will have to right-click on the file, select Properties from the context menu, and under the Summary tab they can enter their name. For users, it would be a manual process to update the metadata to enter their name into the Author field (and then add that column to Windows Explorer's display). The Owner column should show the account that created the file. For files that I create under my account, that field contains: myhostname\myaccount However, Owner is not the same as Creator. Owner is by host and account. Creator could be any user while logged on under that account (and would be their username rather than the account name they used when the created the file). |

I'm so sorry VanguardLH, because my reply to your answer was wrong!
Of course you were right: I have to right-click the column header and and select 'owner' to display the owner/creator of a folder or file. Now for each folder/file a combination of computer-name and user-name is displayed, e.g "MY-NOTEBOOK\user1". Thank you!
