Problem networking Windows 98SE and XP Home SP2
I am new to home networking. I started with a desktop running 98SE with
internet access through dialup, then through a cable modem. I am now trying to network it with a notebook running XP Home SP2 using a D-Link wired router. Both computers can access the internet through my cable modem but cannot talk to each other. My goal is to share a printer on 98SE and hard drives both ways. The 98SE can ping its own IP, the router's IP, and the XP's IP but there is nothing in the Network Neighborhood exept the "entire network" which I am unable to browse. The XP can ping its own IP and the router's IP but gets a "request timed out" when pinging the 98SE IP. However, the 98SE shows up as a workgroup computer but it is not accessible. Both computers have the exact same work group and the IP addresses are assigned automatically (router = 192.168.0.1, XP = 192.168.0.108, 98SE = 192.068.0.118). I ran the network wizard resident on the XP and I also ran the XP network wizard on the 98SE but from the XP CD. The NetBios is enabled in XP and selected but grayed out in 98SE. My networking properties are as follows: 98SE - Client for MS Networks Dial-Up Adapter Motorola Cable Modem RealTek NIC TCP/IP for Dial-Up Adapter TCP/IP for Cable Modem TCP/IP for RealTek NIC File and Print Sharing XP - Client for MS Networks File and Print Sharing QoS Packet Scheduler Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) I have disabled the Windows firewall on the XP and have ZoneAlarm running on 98SE and security suite including firewall running on XP. I have tried with firewalls running and with firewalls disabled. -- Paul |

Problem networking Windows 98SE and XP Home SP2
ZoneAlarm is blocking ICMP echo (ping) on the Win98 machine and is problably
blocking network connections on both machines. Disabling ZoneAlarm will not work. You must either uninstall this software or configure it to allow networking between these machines. Problem networking Windows 98SE and XP Home SP2
Hi,
I have the same connection but a different outcome. After trying all possible combinations of the various MS and MS-compliant protocols, here is what I had and what worked for me: Protocols: Both machine HAD to use TCP/IP and IPX/SPX compliant protocol. Outcome: Both machines could browse the other. Besides, the XP machine could ping the 98 SE machine. However, the other way around returns a "Request time out" message. Any clue? Thanks Yba |

Yba, after removing IPX you can use http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm to solve this problem. Hans-Georg -- No mail, please. |

Problem networking Windows 98SE and XP Home SP2
Thanks Doug,
I unisntalled ZoneAlarm and the XP immediately found the 98SE and could share its printer and files. I have since uninstalled all firewall software as I am protected by the firewall on my D-Link router. The 98SE Network Neighborhood still only shows the entire network (and not the XP) although I can find the XP if I use the "Start - Find - Computer" function. I would like to share the XP files with the 98SE. Any suggestions?
