Default Messenger does not start automatically, does not log in

I am running Windows Messenger. I also have MSN messenger
installed.

Windows Messenger (not MSN messenger) is set to run
automatically when Windows starts, however it does not.

I can start it manually, but when I do, it does not log
in automatically. I have clicked the log in with a
different account, and set it to log in automatically,
but no matter what, it will not log in automatically.

How can I fix this so that Windows Messenger starts when
the computer starts, and also logs in automatically?

Thanks

Greetings Ed,

To fix this, close down Windows Messenger (right-click its icon and choose Exit), then click
Start, then Run, type "regedit" and then click OK. You'll now be in the Registry Editor, if
you're not familiar with it, this is where most configuration settings in Windows end up. To
fix your problem you'll need to navigate to the My
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Mess engerService key (they look like folders
and navigation is the same as in Windows Explorer). After you find the MessengerService key,
click it, then click the Edit menu, then choose Delete. Confirm the operation and now the
MessengerService key should be completely gone. Then close the registry editor, click Start,
then All Programs, then Windows Messenger. If you're using Windows Messenger 5, you'll need
to sign in one more time manually (type your login/password) into Windows Messenger, and
after this it will once again log on automatically.

Jonathan,

This fixed the problem with sign-in, however it did not
fix the problem with Messenger not starting automatically
when I log into Windows.

When I manually start messenger, it now logs in, however,
even though I have checked the option to start when
Windows starts, it does not.

I have tried uninstalling/re-installing messenger. That
didn't help either.

Hi Ed,

As a quick fix to that, simply add the Windows Messenger shortcut back to the Startup group.
To do so, click the Start Menu, point to All Programs, right-click and Startup group and
choose Open. Then choose the File menu, then New, and then Shortcut. In the location field,
enter:
"%programfiles%\messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

(exactly as shown above) then click Next, and then Finish.

It should then open when you logon to Windows.

There must be a more elegant fix.

What might be causing the underlying problem to begin with?

Hi Ed,

This functionality can break with Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger are both installed, I'm
not sure how much more "elegant" you'd like, usually a full uninstallation of Windows
Messenger will give you this functionality back. To do so, uninstall Windows Messenger.

For Windows Messenger 5, click Start, then Run, type (or copy/paste) the following:
msiexec.exe /x {ABEB838C-A1A7-4C5D-B7E1-8B4314B10138}
and then click OK.

For Windows Messenger 4.x, click Start, then Run, and type the following:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
and then click OK.

After uninstalling either product, you'll need to reboot Windows.

Then reinstall Windows Messenger,

For Windows Messenger 5.x:
