Default Windows 8.1 - Next Week?

Any ideas whether it is still scheduled to be released next week?
Originally, it was announced to be on 16th October, so it should be next
week.

MSFT will offer the upgrade in the Windows Store starting on October 18.
- The full retail version of Windows 8.1 is $119.99, and Windows 8.1
Pro is $199.99.
- One can also upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 8.1 Pro for $99.99.
- Media Center which requires Windows 8 Pro continues to be available
at the same price $10 (upgrades a Win8 Pro to Win8 Pro with Media Center)

**Note: Upgrading any version of Pro (retail or OEM) to with Media
Center will yield a new retail license (with a new product key)

I never saw an October 16th date. As far as I know, the only date
that was announced was October 18th, and that's still what it's
supposed to be.

The 16th of October has been postponed this year
due to Congress and the US Government shutdown.

FWIW.

And why I go into the security settings and change it from automatic to
prompt me.

Going to let everyone else try it first. I am too tired of too many
years of Microsoft putzing to want to be first, I would rather wait a month.

Yep, maybe Microsoft can't get the latest NSA keys.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSAKEY

I doubt government would approve if Microsoft shipped a OS that NSA
could not eves drop on.

In a rare case, Microsoft and Google working together and a privacy
lawsuit with the US government.....

http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/201...osoft-sue-gov/

I applaud Microsoft and Google for their joint efforts. As US Gov is
corrupt to the core and using J Edgar Hoovers philosophy, collect all
the information you can as later it can be used for undue influences to
convince others to comply.

Which is really what NSA and CIA do. I am sure FBI uses it to. As it
isn't about justice or LE, its about control of the people. That is why
it is so "secret" and every politician is angry with Snowdon, Assange
and others they haven't tagged yet.

On Win8 the 8.1 offer in WU is a notice.
You still have to go to the MSFT Store to obtain it

- therefore how WU is configured is not relevant

At this time the general understanding of that statement is you will have
the 'opportunity' to upgrade..once the decision is made to upgrade (download
and mount the iso) the 8.1 upgrade will automatically run as a background
process.

As with anything MSFT, deployment is always subject to change in method or
terminology thus its always a good idea to wait until the 'rush' on the
server subsides g

Not everything flows uphill to Canada's betting window.

The Office of the President which includes the First Lady and her staff
had 1701 employes prior to the shutdown. It currently has 436 with 1265
furloughed. The First Lady personally had 24 on her staff with 8
furloughed. Furloughed employes receive partial pay for the Oct 1-5
period, thereafter no pay, no accrual for sick leave or vacation.

p.s.

Fyi...once GA (General Availabilty occurs on Oct 17-18) the official
MSFT direction on the available options to deploy Win8.1 will most
likely appear here.

http://blogs.windows.com/windows/b/springboard/

Bookmark it.

A variety of options are possible.
1. Install from the Store without a separate download (Retail, OEM)
2. Download iso from the Store and install after mounting the iso
(Retail, OEM) - similar to 8.1 but unknown, maybe/maybe not - *not doing
so would ensure that pre-Win8 o/s would not have access to it, overload
the server, limit piracy, etc.*
3. Download the iso, install later (for VL or VL and Retail)-Retail
unlikely since VL have access to MSFT servers contractually with the VL.
4. Purchase the full version (retail Win8 Core, Win8 Pro) - anyone using
a pre Win8 o/s
5. Available from the OEM for those with rights due to recent pc
purchase (possibly for the purpose of retaining access to OEM specific
apps in the Windows Store)
6. 3rd Party (unlikely)
7. All the above
8. None of the above
9. Only odd numbers
10. Only even numbers

Also of note: Personal User for System Builder versions are no longer
for personal use (build your own pc and install on bare metal) only for
installation on a pc that will be sold.
- significant change/revision from Windows 8 EULA

The other variables are how Win8 Pro with Media Center are handled.
- Install and retain MC
- Install with a need to reinstall MC with the previous MC product key
- yada, yada.

On Oct 18...read the blog (link above) for your options.

The next step is renting Windows. They already do that with Office. I
can hardly wait :-(

They don't want you to buy or build PCs. They want you to buy a device
where the only way to upgrade it is to buy a newer device.

Fyi...the only available versions of 8.1 are 'full versions'

As far as the Personal Use for System Builder (PUSB) version...I'm just
referencing what was included in the Windows 8 EULA for the PUSB version
that is no longer present/applicable to 8.1

To answer your question...apparently, no.

Thus if building a pc for personal use and end up with 8.1...the
probable options a
a. Purchase full retail Windows 8 Core or Windows 8 Pro then upgrade via
the MSFT Store app in Win8 to Win 8.1
- retail comes with 32 and 64 bit DVD's
b. Purchase the original Windows 8 PUSB version (Core, Pro) then upgrade
via the MSFT Store app in Win8 to Win 8.1
- PUSB comes with 32 **or** 64 bit DVD (not both)

When using the original Windows 8 PUSB version the installer is required
to select one of two licensing options (personal use or resale)
qp
There are two types of licenses for the OEM/System Builder Windows 8
product: 1. OEM 2. Personal Use. The product is the same for both, but
upon installation, one of the two license must be accepted, depending on
the use. The OEM license allows the OEM to resell the PC. The Personal
Use license is for individuals who are building (and supporting) their
own PCs. Neither are transferable once on the PC, but the OEM license
allows for transferring the entire PC to different users.
/qp

Good luck...choose wisely...and if building a new pc, soon.

Two probable marketing routes.
- PUSB Win8.1 will be available only as an OEM resellable pc (no
personal use)
- PUSB Win8 will continue to be available and PUSB 8.1 will not be a
marketed item.
