Default New messenger for XP? Yes? No?

I am new to this group and I would think this would not be news here but you
can prevent messenger service ads with out turning on your firewall. All
you have to do is disable the messenger service in Services. As stated this
has nothing to with Windows or MSN messenger.

Thanks for the reply. The only way of preventing those
messenger service ads that I was talking about is to run
XP's built-in firewall, however, that hampers my ability
to send files through the file sharing feature of
messenger 4.7. It would be nice to have the next
messenger for XP work along with XP's firewall so that i
can still send files and have the firewall protection
on.... so far I've had to turn off the firewall, then
turn it on again, which is quite cumbersome.

I hope that this suggestion makes it to the messenger 5
for XP, whenever it may me released. Thanks again.

Greetings Vince,

Windows Messenger 5 will come out before Longhorn *grin*.

A new version of Windows Messenger will not "solve" the
Messenger Service ads. The Messenger
Service has absolutely nothing to do with MSN or Windows
Messenger.

Greetings Vince,

As Bill said, you don't have to turn on the XP firewall to block these -- just turn off the
"Messenger Service" -- click Start, then Run, enter "services.msc"and click OK. Scroll down
to "Messenger", select it, right-click and then choose Properties. Under startup type,
choose 'Disabled' and then choose the 'Stop' button. After the service is stopped, click OK.
Nothing in Windows or any real third-party applications should be effected by this.

Or, you can keep the firewall on and just configure it for Messenger file transfers. To do
so, click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in category view click Network and
Internet connections then click Network Connections. Right click your connection, then
click Properties. For cable modem/broadband users, your connection will usually be called
Local Area Connection. For dialup, it should be the name of your Internet Service Provider.
Click the Advanced Tab, verify the Internet Connection Firewall is turned on. Then click the
Settings tab. Click the add button and then in the Service Settings, type in the following
information. For Description enter MSN Connection for Name or IP address enter 127.0.0.1,
for both External and Internal ports enter 1863. Verify TCP is selected and click OK. Now
you need to repeat the last step but changing the ports to 5060, 1503, 6891, 6892, 6893,
6894, 6895, 6896, 6897, 6898, 6899, 6900. Yes, 13 (including the first one) will now be
selected.

Then click the 'Remote Desktop' entry (that was there before you started) and click Edit.
Enter 127.0.0.1 as the IP, and click OK (can't change anything else). Make sure all 14 (the
13 you added + Remote Desktop) connections are selected then click OK. For screenshots on
this procedure, see
