Did you asked which of the 100 computers you manage needs the licence
renewed? ;-)

I actually got one of them to hang up on me with that question instead
of me hanging up on them.

I've never gotten a call about a license, but I've gotten other calls
from "MS". Sometimes I ask if their mother knows what they do for
money". (I don't use the word "earn".) One guy spent more than 5
minutes with me arguing that he wasn't a thief.

You must have lots of time to waste. I just hang up on spammers and
scammers as quickly as possible.

I have 6 minutes. Usually they hang up on me the first time I say
that so this time was very interesting.

it's not a new scam.

New to me. When I looked up the number, I saw posts from just the past
few days, but perhaps they were just the most recent and there were much
older ones if I'd scrolled down.

nonsense.

888 is a toll-free area code, along with 800, 877, 866, 855, 844 & 833.

I have decided NEVER to give out financial information (or computer
access) to an unknown caller.

Was this a home phone number? Was the caller ID name "TOLL FREE CALL".
While it's POSSIBLE that would be someone selling business phone
services, it's almost certainly NOT a legitimate call.

I have blocked all the "toll free" codes except 800 itself (822, 833,
844, 855, 866, 877, 888, 899). This seems to block all those calls.

The scam calls it's not so easy to block include some with "Out Of Area"
or "UNASSIGNED" as the caller's name, but mostly it's "CITY ST" such
as "AMARILLO TX". Likely to be a scam NOT city government.

BTW, I did actually get a legitimate call from "CITY ST" ONCE (for a
burn ban notice). That's one out of dozens or hundreds.

all who have toll-free numbers.

Definitely. The displayed Caller ID information was "800 Service," which
is exactly what we see displayed when our local hospital calls to follow
up after procedure, by one of our doctors, and by one of our banks --
and I think all of those numbers are in fact 888 numbers.

usually it has the business name, such as the hospital or bank.

'800 service' is generic and suggests spam, but isn't always.

asked him which one of my 5 PC's is it? He hung up...

I block all toll free area codes also (home phone). Trouble is it no
longer works that well. Scammers/spammers now munge my local area code
in an attempt to get me to pick up. My blocker has a 2500 number
capability but it's a losing battle since they all change numbers. I
think I may invoke the final solution this year...cancel the home phone.

On the cell phone my blocker won't ring the phone unless the caller is
on my contact list. Legitimate blocked callers can still leave a message
on voice mail. Scammers/spammers seldom do. I think most are programmed
to quit after 4 rings or so.

Perhaps. But in the many years I've used the blocker I've not had one
problem (that I'm aware of). YMMV.

You were on the phone with him about five seconds longer than I would

You might want to look into the free NoMoRoBo. It works very well for

Me, too. I estimate it to be about 85% effective. Not perfect, but it

But what about when numbers are spoofed, especially when the call
appears as a local number? What if a local number is blocked because it
gets used by some robocaller a few times, and is blocked when it is
actually a neighbor calling from that number to tell me that some family
member has ben involved in an accident?
