If you convert a WAV file to MP3, 128 bit rate, there is

a 10:1 compression. 6 MB file becomes 0.6 MB.

Thanks, I will keep than in mind.

I'm intereted in hearing the .wav file, but that website doesn't work for

me and being on dial up 6MB is a bit daunting anyway.

Does the sound change, as in sweep frequencies, over time; or is it

constant? If it's weird, but constant, with approximately 1 second's worth

it can be 'reconstituted.

If the sound is NOT sweeping, could you send approx 1 second of the sound

as attachment to me?

I am waiting on EasyNews to turn on posting.

I tried posting a 875 K uuencoded .wav file.

It never made it here. :-)

I will continue looking for site for temp storage that other can access.

I forgot this on the last post.
While waiting for the service tech to come out, I hooked up my modem.

It can dial and connect to a cell phone.

When calling the land line from a cell phone, it rings once and hangs up.

Andy;

Try he

No registration. Just upload the file and it generates a URL.

An example:

Of course not. This is a text-only group, as are nearly all Usenet
discussion groups. Any binary attachment you try to post will be
stripped out by your and/or other news servers.

in the interim send anyway?

I have a .wav file I made. use it for a ring tone with double burst, like
British ringers. It's very unusual and sounds a bit celestial. I've had
people adjacent to me jump as they hear the sound when the ringer goes
off. If you play this sound faster, or slower; it still sounds the same.
Sounds a little like someone laid their arm on the organ keyboard. A bit
'teeth jarring'

Thank you for posting this site. It works for me as Dropbox does NOT, just
hangs

Who 'pays' for this service?

This site doesn't 'mine your system' does it?

Robert:

I don't know who actually pays for the service but I have never had a
problem with it. Since the file size is limited and the file is stored
for only a limited time it is possible it operates like Wikipedia on
donations and volunteers.

Let's test it. I made a 128Kbit/sec MP3 with the LAME encoder
on Audacity, and uploaded that to the site. File size 580,127 bytes.
SHA1 sum = 0d60d179bae0737b8610ff70f19789a0ec2e55d5

http://wikisend.com/download/338842/...nPhoneLine.mp3

The site says the file will be there for seven days.
So that's a smaller version of the file Andy provided.

The MP3 encoding, doesn't exactly preserve the waveform, but
it's good enough.

I have no experience with examining phone line waveforms - to me,
the only part of that waveform that is interesting, is the
"RC charging" waveform at 4.43 seconds in the MP3.

Verizon got the noise problem fixed.

Tech told me that had a fire 6 months ago on another part of the complex leading to wires getting wet.

Apparently they have two sets of wires coming to each phone jack. ??

So he just cut some wires in the box that went to the wet area.

I thanked him.

And wondered.

They know the wires are wet.

I guess they wait til someone gets a land line and complains.

Wouldn't it be pretty easy to just cut all the bad wires while the panel is open ?

That's why they get the big bucks. :-)
