How to diagnose QueryDosDevice Failed error
I've started to get the "QueryDosDevice Failed. Insufficient system
resources exist to complete the requested service" pop-up rather consistantly. Is there a way to find out which requested service is causing the problem? The last time i had this problem my Profile became corrupted. Windows somehow fixed the Profile, and i stopped getting the error message. This time however the Profile is acting strangly, some programs wont run, for example iTunes complains about not being able to verify my Audio drivers, and stops working. Something else i've notice is that Task Manager is "dimmed" and unavailable for use. Also when i type CTRL-Alt-Del only the Cancel button is available. The HD i am using is fairly new, about 6 months. I migrated from a smaller ATA drive to a Segate 250 SATA drive. I use the migration tool provided with the new drive and it worked perfectly i didn't lose any data. I am mentioning this because i don't know if this is related to my "QueryDosDevice Failed" problem. I setup a new account and profile, and noticed that as soon as i tried to use iTunes i got the Audio errors, and the "QueryDosDevice Failed" pop-up started. So, is there a way for me to diagnose and fix this problem? Thanks all Bob |

QueryDosDevice is a Windows function used to look up mapped drive letters (C:, D:, E: etc.) When you open Windows Explorer, are all of your drive letters displaying normally and accessible? Are you running any third- party drivers that use a drive letter for a special device? Have you tried booting into Safe Mode? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222 Task Manager unavailable sounds more like an infection to me. Have you run complete virus and spyware scans with up-to-date tools? |

I am not in front of my computer at the moment, but i think all of the
drives C: and D: the dvd drive, were present. This morning i also had my external USB drive F: running also, but i can't recall if the drive letter was F: i think it was. I booted into safe mode, i still noticed some of the same symptoms like i
can't open task manager. One other thing i forgot to mention is that only the Logoff option is available from the Start menu, there is no Shut Down option. I alos tried booting into the last know working configuration but i get the same results. Sometimes when i login i see different problems that have me believing i have a problem with my Profile, for example Spy Sweeper wouldn't start properly. I've see this type of problem on a computer where fast switching was available, i am not using fast swiching in this case. I am using a PCI CreativeLab Sound Blaster card, i will re-install the driver because iTunes gave me the audio errors, i am hoping i don't have to re-install windows. You can't run Task Manager, and your ability to shut down normally has been locked out both in the ctrl-alt-del popup *and* the Start menu? That would be a heck of a coincidence. Sounds to me like you have malware that's trying to prevent you from uninstalling it. A corrupt profile could indeed cause some of the same symptoms, but malware is the avenue I would explore first. |

the symtoms keep piling on... last nite while booting the computer right
before the login screen appears i see on my screen the "Mode not Supported" displayed on the monitor. I plugged in a different monitor and got the same error, but after a reboot that particular error went away. After i logged in i still have the Task manager, Shut Down option issue, but the QueryDosDevice pop-up never appears. I figured it is time to back up everything i can and reformat this computer. While i was backing up some video to a DVD i got a blue screen error, and an automatic reboot. After logging back in i got the messages about sending a report to MS. This weekend looks like another Windows OS rebuild, oh well i haven't done one for about 2 years, i guess i am over due... thanks for your help Mark Bob "Mark Blain" wrote in message ...
