Services startup log?
Dear all,
for some time (do not know the exact time, so tracing back the culprit service/process is impossible) some kind of service / process puts explorer on a hold after I log in to my XP Prof. SP3 - latest patches. Hovering the mouse over the taskbar results in a sandwatch icon and the Start- button, quicklaunch etc. are disabled. The only way to get some response is to ctrl-shift-esc into the task manager, kill explorer.exe and restart it. Using sysinternals' "autoruns"-tool reveals literally hundreds of entries for services/processes to be started. The windows Eventlogs do not show any errors. So my question is: is there an application / service, that can monitor / log _everything_ that is happening after the login so I could try to find the item that blocks the further execution of remaining auto-run processes and applications? I tried with a very naive approach to kill processes from their highest PID downwards, to no extend and I am not really happy with the prospect of disabling all services, enabling them service-by-service, re-logon and see when the hanging starts. Thank you for any hints in advance Cheers Jakob |

Services startup log?
Dear Leonard,
I really make an effort to keep my system clean by running several spy- and malware protection / cleaning applications (Spybot search & destroy etc.(, professional virus protection (Symantec Antivir with daily updates), I use firefox for browsing, keep a tight (3rd-party) firewall etc. . But still after a fresh install I tend to end up with loads of services (SVN integration, IMs, quickstarters, databases, etc. etc. ) that things get messy. What I am looking for is a detailed log similar to *nix-runlevel management logfiles to trace what actually is happening. Also I seem to be unable to figure out whether there the start of services / processes is sequential or parallel (if it is parallel, why would a the explorer process hang, if it is sequential, which means are available to monitor this sequence etc). Thank you very much for your answer Cheers Jakob On Apr 22, 4:35*pm, Leonard Grey wrote: Next step: Flush malware. --- Leonard Grey Errare humanum est jakob wrote: On Apr 22, 3:53 pm, Leonard Grey wrote: What processes takes up most of the CPU resources? That's just the name for what the system is doing when it's not doing anything. It's there to make the total add up to 100%. Given the numbers you quote above, you are using only 1% of the CPU--a tiny amount--and there is no problem indicated. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP - Windows Desktop Experience Please Reply to the Newsgroup |

Make sure there are no unnecessary errors and warnings in Event Viewer. Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48 hours ago. You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important. A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Right click on the Report in the list and select Properties. In the window, which appears are three buttons towards the top right of the window. The top one has an arrow up, underneath is an arrow down and third is a button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer. It is not obvious but this action places a copy of the report in your Clipboard. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer. -- Hope this helps.
