Since Microsoft cancelled my account, with no notice and no
explanation, the last thing I want is another one.

I would not trust anything to them at all, in spite of their
blandishments, because if you become dependent on them, you can lose
everything at one fell swoop. Their TOS say that they can cancel your
service at any time, without warning, reason or explanation.

I have one account for all things microsoft:

Just recently I concocted a persona on LinkedIn, just as anyone can.
LinkedIn then asked if it could find friends for me and asked for my
email address. I supplied my David Dewgud 'Outlook.com' address and a
search was duly made.

Imagine my surprise when it found all of the contacts from my original
BD @ hotmail.co.uk address which I've used for nearly 20 years.

Perhaps you, or someone else reading here, can explain that?

[1] DeltaSync will cease to be a functional mail protocol for any MSFT
account in the near future (after MSFT moves the Outlook.com services to
the Office365 server - O365 server only supports EAS, IMAP, and POP3 -
though the latter may be on a very short lease.
Outlook.com applies to all types of MSFT accounts (Outlook.com,
Live.com, Hotmail.com, MSn.com, Aliases of those same accounts, and any
3rd party email address including its aliases registered as a MSFT
account using the available Outlook.com UI Send and/or Receive feature)
