Can't start windows XP

Had my pc fixed by a pro, but the next day when I started my pc it said there
was a running error in my Roxio program. I went to add and remove hardware or
repair I clicked on repair it then asked to put the Roxio disc in I followed
the proms. Had to restart and I did. Now it says as soon as I restart NTLDR
is missing. Can any one help me. Lucky we have 2 pc's running so I can do
this.

Please post the Stop Error report.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

What is your computer make and model.

Please describe your Windows XP CD.

You didn't say what the Pro fixed...

I'm going to hazard a guess that your had some problem that required the Pro
to fix some disk corruption, which was a symptom, but missed the problem.

I suspect a failing harddrive, not because ntldr missing means the drive is
failing, but because I think you may be seeing a progressively worsening
situation

The first and most obvious solution is to replace the ntldr file and that is
what many people will tell you--simple enough, you take your drive from the
bad computer, mount it as a slave to the new computer and copy it over (the
file is located in your root directory--c:\)

I think, however, it is really a case of disk corruption (almost all of
these ???? is missing at boot up are), which means you can boot your PC with
a Windows XP disk, choose R to repair with Recovery Console, and enter the
recovery console . When you get to a prompt, type

chkdsk /r
enter

Let it do its thing and hour later your computer will boot as normal. As I
said, however, I think you are seeing a progressively worsening drive issue

Hi Gerry,
My pc runs on Windows XP professional it is about 4years old all I know is
it is a pentium 4, 80 gb harddrive and 1 gb memmory.
I restarted the pc after your reply but I can't get into windows so this
means no My Computer Icon. I tried F8 nothing, but when I restart is says
delite or press F12 or boot F12, F12 gives me choices of floppy, Hard disk,
CDROM, Lan, so what should I do?????

Hi Gerry, I realy appriciate your replies, but sofar I don't know what to do
because I'm not sure what to do. The Pro fixed the pc because it was running
slow. So whatever he did and installed a couple of registry cleaners it
looked like it worked ok. But as I turned it on today it said that my Roxio
programme there was a Runtime error Program\common Files\Roxio Shared etc. So
I went to Control panel and add and remove I click on that in Roxio programme
and I also had the option to repair so I clicked repair and put in the disc
had to restart when it was completed.
Then the problem realy started because it doesn't start anymore. And because
I'm in Aussie it is a public holiday today and most people have the weekend
of I like to fix it myself if I can.
So tell me in a way I will understand what to do Pleaseeeeeeeeeeee!

Step 1

If you have a windows xp cd, start the computer and boot with it and choose
recovery console.

Then follow the instructions beginning at STEP 2

If you do not have a Windows XP CD, do the following

download RC.iso from the following link:

http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/rc.iso

You need to burn this image to a CD and boot your computer with it--this is
different than burning a file to a CD. If you do not know how to burn an ISO
image, then download the following program to another Windows XP machine,
install it.

make certain you download the proper installation for your version of
windows. Open MY COMPUTER, choose HELP ABOUT. Note the service pack and
get the appropriate version of the iso burner power toy

After installation, reboot, then right click the RC.iso file you downloaded
above and choose COPY IMAGE TO CD.

Then reboot your broken PC with that CD in the CD-ROM drive.

This will give you a recovery console to use to run

Insert the cd into the non-functioning PC



STEP 2

When boot begins, a windows setup will appear to start, but you will be
taken to a recovery console.

You will need to select your windows installation by pressing a number, most
likely 1

Windows will ask you for a password

If you have XP home, press enter...there is no password

If you have XP Pro, you need to enter the password you set when you
installed your machine with XP Pro.

After entering the password, you will find yourself at a command prompt that
looks like this

c:\windows

type
chkdsk /r
enter

follow the prompts, then when it is complete, remove the CD

type

EXIT

enter

the machine will reboot

are you up and running? If so, we should do one more thing

Start run
cmd
enter

in the box that appears, type
chkdsk /f
enter


Reboot. Windows will run one more chkdsk

When Windows comes back on, right click on MY COMPUTER, choose MANAGE,
select EVENT VIEWER, look in APPLICATIONS ... on the right, you will see a
long list....find winlogon, double click

Look through the log and see what it shows, specifically, look in the
results for a section that reads

??? in bad sectors.

If that number (???) is 0, you're OK, but if there is a number there, it is
a sign your harddrive is beginning to fail
