Cannot start Windows
Since the latetst update of Windows I cannot start Windows XP at all, because
a file windows-hoofdmap\system32\hal.dll is damaged or cannot be found. Can anyone tell me what I should do? -- Sjors, Gouda, The Netherlands |

Cannot start Windows
Additional info: I interrupted the update. Reinstalling Windows is the
solution? -- Sjors, Gouda, The Netherlands "Sjors" wrote: Since the latetst update of Windows I cannot start Windows XP at all, because a file windows-hoofdmap\system32\hal.dll is damaged or cannot be found. Can anyone tell me what I should do? -- Sjors, Gouda, The Netherlands |

Cannot start Windows
This is a problem which usually happens across Europe more then it does in other parts of the world (dont ask why lol), hal.dll is a file which is associated with the hardware abstraction layer, this controls and communicates with Windows to initiate its starting phase, however sometimes a mis-communication between hal.dll and Win XP occurs ideally in Windows SP1, This is usually because the file BOOT.INI cant locate it anymore, to solve it you have: Restart your computer and insert the Windows CD-ROM Press the R button until a repair prompt is given This should then give you options on which SP your using, choose the correct one of course Now type bootcfg / list (this will display the contents of BOOT.INI) To repair this type bootcfg / rebuild once done type exit. This should remake your whole BOOT.INI database and hal.exe should now work fine, if the problem persists then the Recovery process will be needed. -- svchost.exe ------------------------------------------------------------------------ svchost.exe's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/92884.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/windows-x...rt/1166938.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

Cannot start Windows
Thanks for your reaction. I use SP2 and tried what you described. However, I
kept pressing the R-button what resulted in a restart that was stopped accompanied by beeps. As soon as I stopped pressing the R button the restart was continued until the meaasge that the hal.dll file was missing. Any idea? -- Sjors, Gouda, The Netherlands "svchost.exe" wrote: This is a problem which usually happens across Europe more then it does in other parts of the world (dont ask why lol), hal.dll is a file which is associated with the hardware abstraction layer, this controls and communicates with Windows to initiate its starting phase, however sometimes a mis-communication between hal.dll and Win XP occurs ideally in Windows SP1, This is usually because the file BOOT.INI cant locate it anymore, to solve it you have: Restart your computer and insert the Windows CD-ROM Press the R button until a repair prompt is given This should then give you options on which SP your using, choose the correct one of course Now type bootcfg / list (this will display the contents of BOOT.INI) To repair this type bootcfg / rebuild once done type exit.
