Create Power User Account on XP Home
I have 2 PCs using ICS to connect to Internet thru 56k dial up connection.
PC1 (Host) is running Windows XP Professional with 2nd PC running Windows XP Home. I want to use the Power User Account Permissions, but XP Home does not have a Power User Group. How can I create a Power User Account on XP Home? Also, if I move the users from users group to Power User Group, will it screw up my existing ICS connection to the Internet. I noticed on some of the documentation that I read that the Power User Account does not start the same services as the User account by default. Do I just need to add the user to the Power User group or do I need to actually move them from the user group to Power User group. I am confused! |

Create Power User Account on XP Home
It's the "Forgotten" difference between Home & Professional. Home
offers only Administrator & Limited accounts. Anytime, I'm asked to setup a shared "Family PC", I mention that for older children it might be good to have Professional to make them PowerUsers. So using XP Home is an All-or-Nothing (much) situation. "Lori Ann Kuiper" wrote in message ... I have 2 PCs using ICS to connect to Internet thru 56k dial up connection. Create Power User Account on XP Home
I thought that it was possible to create a group on XP Home with the same
properties as the Power User Group on XP Professional--I read an article somewhere on how to do this, but I can't remember where I saw it. If it is not possible to setup a Power User Group on XP Home, will I screw up my Internet Connection Sharing if I add the users to the Power User Group on the XP Pro Computer and leave them as regular users on the XP Home PC? I was worried that if the accounts are not exactly the same, I will have trouble with my shared internet connection? "R. McCarty" wrote in message ink.net... Create Power User Account on XP Home
I'm not really versed in Internet Connection Sharing, so I don't know the
answer. I would think that ICS is a system level function, not impacted by the type of account logged in to use it ? I don' think there is a way to mimic a Power Users group on Home, it doesn't have support for Group policies. "Lori Ann Kuiper" wrote in message ... Create Power User Account on XP Home
Thanks for the info! Two more questions. When I add the XP Pro user to the
Power User Group--do I just add that user to the new group or should I also remove them from the Users Group? I guess I need to know if it is better to have them members of both groups or just the Power Users Group? I just don't want to screw up anything. Last question. I have fast user switching turned on on both PC's. I may need to turn this off later. I remember reading another article that said something about needing to enable the guest account. At present the guest account is turned off on both PC's. Am I suppose to have this enabled? In security options on the Pro PC it is set to authenticate as guest only. My local area connection says to authenticate as computer. Not sure what these should be setup as? "R. McCarty" wrote in message nk.net... Create Power User Account on XP Home
Account privilege levels include downward/lesser privileges.
Just move them from the Users group to Power users. Fast User Switching is O.K., but it depends on your system, if someone has 8 Word Docs open, a browser and other apps and FUS'es out, that loads the system. Personally, I don't use or recommend FUS. Just take the few extra seconds to close things out and do a Log off. Leave the Guest account off. It's really only practical in business environments. How many times does someone visit you at home and ask to use your PC? "Lori Ann Kuiper" wrote in message ... Thanks for the info! Two more questions. You cannot create such groups in Home. -- Alex Nichol MS MVP (Windows Technologies) Bournemouth, U.K. (remove the D8 bit) |
