Default MS Edge and Google Chrome will start up

Neither my MS Edge nor my Google Chrome will start up in my W10 this
AM. Were okay yesterday. They both hang when I open either, and
eventually time out. OTOH my other internet operations seem ok - my
Eudora email, my OEClassic email, this newsgroup app, etc. Task
manager shows nothing that I see.

I tried my other W10 PC on same router connection and all is fine.

I wonder what to do?

Thanks

Sam

That's a good question.

I wouldn't start on trying to repair Edge first, as it's a Metro App.
I don't even know if Windows Defender scans the Edge files or not.
The file manifest is probably designed to prevent modified files
from running. If it was damaged in that way, it should re-download
itself from the Windows App Store.

For conventional browsers, at least some of them have a Reset procedure.
Intended to wipe the equivalent of prefs.js. Make sure you have a backup
of C: before you start hammering stuff.

I can find a page like this for the Chromium project, but I don't
know if this requires a "debug" build, or would work with "release"
software. They show a tool here for manipulating the loglevel,
a program called "Sawbuck", at the bottom of the page.

https://www.chromium.org/for-testers/enable-logging

Since both your Edge and Chrome are acting up, it does sound
like something has carried out a coordinated attack. Are any other
actual *web browsers* also broken ? You have iexplore to test
if you want, both 32 bit and 64 bit versions. IE11 is still
present on the computer and can be used as another test case.

If you're bored, you can also try Adwcleaner. If has a scan
option, just so you can get some idea what is going on.

Go into Task Manager and kill any remnant instances of MicrosoftEdge.exe
and chrome.exe. See if they start up.

Maybe the shortcuts for the web browser are corrupted. Have you tried
starting the web browsers from a command line? Tis possible malware
changed the home page to something that attempts to connect somewhere
you don't want. In the command line to load the web browser, add a URL
to a known good site, like "path\chrome.exe www.intel.com" and
"start microsoft-edge:http://www.intel.com". That will load the
specified page instead of any home page(s).

For Google Chrome, run it in its no-extension mode. Add the
--disable-extensions --disable-plugins switches to the command line to
run chrome.exe.

Disable your anti-virus and retry.

If that doesn't work, reboot. Not a hibernate or hybrid startup where
prior state is resumed but a cold reboot (full power off and power on).
See if they start up. If that doesn't work, reboot into Windows safe
mode with networking and retry. If safe mode works then something you
load on Windows startup causes the problem.

Have you updated your anti-virus software and performed a full scan?
Are you using something better than what comes bundled in Windows?

If still no go, make sure there are no instances of either web browser
still running or stuck in memory. Then try to load one of them. When
it fails, go into Event Viewer to see if there is an entry for that web
browser.

To reset Chrome back to install-time settings, see:

https://www.howtogeek.com/171924/how...ault-settings/

Internet Explorer had a Reset function. Not so with Edge. See:

https://www.howtogeek.com/237527/how...in-windows-10/

All that does is purge locally cached data, not reset Edge. See:

I wish it's not a virus nor malware. DO you have other devices that
could access internet with a browser? First, check out "edge browser reset".

So do I.

This AM I tried my HP W19 PC again. I find:

My Eudora Gmail program runs fine - which means it will connect with
Gmail.com on the web.

My OeClassic program runs fine too - which means it will connect with
Gmail.com on the web.

My Google Chrome program hangs with no web access to
https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/
- which means Google Chrome has a problem.

My Windows Explorer so-called Edge hangs with no web acces to
https://mail.aol.com/webmail-std/en-us/suite
- which means Edge has a problem.

I am between a rock and a hard place- I can't access the web with any
browser to download a new copy of either problematic browser or
anything else.

Notice my Forte Agent Web access to easynews.com works fine too -
witness this reply.

So what to do?
Thanks
Sam

The two browsers I have, as I said, do not work. So I can't download
anything.

Default MS Edge and Google Chrome will start up

Hey guys-

I just went into task manager and tried to remove any and all Google
Chrome items, a few of which would not remove, rebooted, and now
Google Chome is nowhere to be seen, leaving MS Edge active. Now all
seems good. I have a working browser. Now I am left to figger what
did and what to do.
Thanks

I managed to get the debug output to appear, using
a Debug build of Chromium. There is no guarantee the
printed statements, help you understand what the problem
is though.

https://s1.postimg.org/bc1t1j10v/Chrome_Logging.png

I got that working on Firefox once, by doing a Debug build,
and I was trying to fix a printing problem. And those
logging statements didn't help a bit. Because there
were too few of them in the printing module to shine a light
on the problem. For that one, I also used the debugger in
Visual Studio, and gave up after two hours, because it
was too hard to follow program flow.
