Windows 10 can sometimes be a real mess. Between botched updates,
treating its users as beta testers, and adding features we never wanted
it can be tempting to downgrade. But you shouldn’t go back to Windows
8.1, and we can tell you why.

Seriously: We installed Windows 8.1 and used it for a few hours so you
wouldn’t have to.

Good article!

Good article!

I got a kick out of reading it also. I loved Win 8.1 with the Start8
menu. I didn't really want to go to 10. Now, as the article says, I
wouldn't touch 8 again. I have it in a VM and I can get around it but
it just doesn't feel right after so many years away.

Based on the history of failures on Windows 10, if
you forced me to make a choice today of having only
one OS, I'd have to select Windows 8. I have no guarantees
on the "quality" of Windows 10. It stays on the short
leash due to it's "non-convergent" behavior. It doesn't
get better from release to release. It's some sort of
"hobby OS" for a team of 7000 developers. Because it's a
rolling release, they're not held accountable for the
quality. If they break my webcam (which is still broken),
it's "oops! too bad and so sad!".

Right now in Windows 10, I can play a 3D game, and at
random the game quits and I'm thrown back to the desktop.
And unlike traditional game failures, where you hear "looping
sound", the sound stops instantly too. And there's a power
management event, a weird one, seen in Event Viewer. *No*
error message on the machine, as you would normally get
with a "code" or "resource" issue. There's no "segmentation fault"
or "invalid address" 0x12345678 to marvel at. There's nothing.

Now, how much would you pay, as a customer, for such an OS ? Hmmmm???

Right now my charity jar is pretty empty. After this many
releases, there's no more "benefit of the doubt". It's never
going to pick itself up off the floor. It has enough rough
edges to use as a bench grinder.

No, you need to go to 7, which is much better than either 8 or 10 !

Did you actually read it? I don't think they made a single valid point.
It's just another fluff piece, completely devoid of fact.

Yes, I DID read it. I like to keep abreast of things but rely heavily on
my 27inch Apple iMac for everyday computing. It's a FANTASTIC piece of
kit! :-)

I didn't know Classic Shell had stopped development -- did it? -- but it
gives me no problems, despite what this article says.

When I was trying to help my brother before we turned on the remote
program (name escapes me), I had no idea what his startup screen looked
like or what to tell him to do.

I heard win8 was terrible, but never knew why before.

Good article!

If you don't use/need these Metro/Modern/UWP/whatever apps - i.e.
you just use/need Real Windows (TM) -, Windows 8.1 [1] is perfectly
fine.

[1] Note '8.1', not '8' (which was indeed not very good).

Classic Shell is dead, but the project has gone Open Source and
continues to be developed as "Open Shell Menu". I use Classic Shell
with Windows 7 to add a few features Microsoft left out. I use Classic
Shell with Windows 8.1 because I can't stand its default interface. I
use Windows 10 as it it - I think its interface is quite usable and
useful.

I think Windows 8.1 is quite all right, when used with Classic/Open
shell. It has less of the privacy-violating features of Windows 10 and
all the functionality of Windows 7.

Good to know. Without checking, I don't know what I have.

Well, I don't have 8 or 8.1 anyhow, so I'll drop out of this.

If you need one, you can get a reference one of sorts,
as a virtual machine. You can run Windows 8 in a window
via VirtualBox or similar.

https://developer.microsoft.com/en-u...dge/tools/vms/

*******

If you "need to install Windows 8 for a look" while helping
your relatives with TeamViewer, you can use these install
keys to bypass the insistence on entering a key value.
These are "bypass" keys and do not activate. They're
used by IT people doing WADK or the like. The "grace period"
of usage, is still at least 30 days with these.

XKY4K-2NRWR-8F6P2-448RF-CRYQH (Windows 8 Professional)
RR3BN-3YY9P-9D7FC-7J4YF-QGJXW (Windows 8 Professional with Media Center)
FB4WR-32NVD-4RW79-XQFWH-CYQG3 (Windows 8 [Home])
XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB (Windows 8.1 Professional)
GBFNG-2X3TC-8R27F-RMKYB-JK7QT (Windows 8.1 Professional with Media Center)
334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT (Windows 8.1 [Home])

If you wanted to license one of those installations,
you can enter a different (valid) key and then
click the button to activate. I actually tested
that with my Win8 key, and it worked OK. I installed
on purpose with the bypass key, just to prove the
legit key could validate the OS later.

If you need media, use Heidoc.
