Default Norton

I installed Norton internet security - firewall 2004 (demo version) but since
doing so i have been unable to connect to the internet. I then tried to
uninstall and got a message about bot being able to do so due to access
rights (i was logged in as administrator). I tried a number of things but
got the general idea that it needed to connect to the web to update the
product which in turn would let me un-install, in the end i had to roll back
XP to a previous date to try and get rid of the program.

I have done this succesfully but still cant access the internet.

I would like to re-install XP over the top of the previous version as i dont
want to loose any files/programs isntalled, will installing over the top solve
this type of problem.....?

Any ideas?
