SCRNSAVE.EXE
Help! My scrnsave.exe is nowhere to be found on my
computer. Search comes up empty. Is there any way to reinstall that file or download it from somewhere? I tried System Restore and had no luck - I tried 3 different restore points and each time it was unsuccessful (never told me why, just that it was unable to restore it to that point). Any help will be appreciated .. I'm in way over my head here! |

SCRNSAVE.EXE
AFAIK, "scrnsave.exe" isn't a built in file. whatever screensaver you are
looking for is in the form screensavername.scr. An SCR file is the screensaver. KB "haukmom" wrote in message ... Help! My scrnsave.exe is nowhere to be found on my computer. Search comes up empty. SCRNSAVE.EXE
Thanks for the info. As I said I think I'm in way over my
head! What I'm trying to do is change the logon screen screensaver. I got instructions to run regedit. One of the steps is to go to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop and change the value of "SCRNSAVE.EXE" to the name of the screensaver I want to use. There is no value called "SCRNSAVE.EXE". The other names are listed (i.e., ScreenSaveActive, ScreenSaveTimeOut, etc.)Am I missing something? Right now I have no screensaver on the logon screen. It just blinks at the time out. -----Original Message----- AFAIK, "scrnsave.exe" isn't a built in file. whatever screensaver you are looking for is in the form screensavername.scr. SCRNSAVE.EXE
Hi,
Their is an easier way. To change the defalult saver ( Logon.scr ) to another just delete it ( Make a backup ) than rename the saver you want to use from whatever.scr to Logon.scr. That is the easy part. The tricky part is to keep windows from replaceing it from the backup. If you simply right click and delete logon.scr from system32, windows will replace is in a few seconds. Try it. The cure is to delete the backup(s) first. They are in C:\windows\system32\dllcache\Logon.scr and in c:\windows\SystemPack\files\i386\Logon.scr They must be removed in order. First from i386 than dllcache than system32. Answer the warnings from windows " Cancel " for the first message and " Yes " for the second mesage. It is only hard the first time. Good luck Richard "haukmom" wrote in message ... Help! My scrnsave.exe is nowhere to be found on my computer. Search comes up empty. SCRNSAVE.EXE
See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilties, Change Default Screen Saver. This
utility will scan your Windows and Windows\System32 folder for SCR files, present the list and make the registry changes automatically. Alternatively, since you have the other values, right click in the right pane, select New, DWord value and name that value SCRNSAVE.EXE Then double click it and enter the file name of the SCR file that you wish to use. -- Doug Knox, MS-MVP Windows XP/ Windows Smart Display Win 95/98/Me/XP Tweaks and Fixes http://www.dougknox.com -------------------------------- Associate Expert ExpertZone - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone -------------------------------- Please reply only to the newsgroup so all may benefit.
