Default all icons changed after installing sp2

Hi all,

After installing service pack 2 I could no longer connect to the internet
and many of my icons (task bar, start menu, desktop) changed to generic
icons.

Because of the internet connectivity issues (and because I already have a
host of sercurity programs) I removed sp2.

Since reverted back to sp1, I can now get on the internet again, but all my
icons are still messed up. Does anyone know what may have caused this and
more importantly how I can fix it?

Thanks to anyone with information on this problem. It's driving me crazy!

Ron-

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm concerned that this fix will only help
with internet links, whereas I'm having problems with links on my desktop, in
the task bar, on the start menu, etc. (in addition to within internet
explorer). For example, if I'm browsing my computer, all docs that used to
show up as ms word documents now have a generic icon (even though they will
still open in word).

Also, all of my microsoft office links seem to have disappeared even though
the programs are still on the computer.

When I tried to download FavOrg, pcmag asked me to subscribe and/or purchase
the software. Is there any other fix for this problem?

Thanks,

-S

Your icons are stored in the Temp Internet Folder and as things get added
others get moved out. Installing the update and then reverting back to
pre-SP2 has probably caused all your icons to lose association with any
icons other than generic. My recommendation is FavOrg which will go out and
find the associated icon for each link and can also be set to place the
FavIcon in a different location so this doesn't continue to happen.

No - that will only help with your Internet icons. You most probably have
other issues. To quote Frank Saunders:

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available he

If nothing there helps, please post back to this thread.
