Default No secpol.msc or gpedit.msc ?

There are no policy editors installed on this W8 laptop (Samsung) - assumed 8 basic then.

Is this correct ? Are they really removed - can they be installed properly.

-I'm trying to change the LAN Manager authentication levels to enable simple samba shares to work.

Whoa which version of Windows 8 are you running? Samsung sells laptops
with either Windows 8 RT or Windows 8. There is a huge difference. What
does the screen say when you press Win+Pause Break combo? I don't even
know if that works under Windows 8 RT.

Ooo I though he's a way to tell properly which version is installed ...

Laptop, no Pause/Break key on internal keyboard - I hate this problem.
So please, any other way to confirm ?

Another way is through the Control Panel and select System. I am pretty
sure the Pause Break key is there. You might need to use the Fn key too
to access it. I looked it up your model and the only thing I learned is
it is Windows 8 64-bit and that's all. And it uses an Intel i5 CPU which
means you can pretty much bet that it isn't the stripped down Windows 8
RT version. That is good. ;-)

To see your version of Windows 8
Winkey + X
Click on System

Gpedit.msc is available on Windows Professional, Windows Pro with Media Center, and Windows Enterprise. It is not available on the
entry level version called Windows 8.
- Windows 8 entry level version is also but incorrectly referred to as Windows 8 Basic or Windows 8 Home Premium...those terms
'Basic and Home' are unique to Vista and/or Win7

Based upon the adds, it's using win 8 or Win 8 Home. (Same thing, I
guess) EUK looks like a United Kingdom version.
There were/are a few other possibilities for European versions of
windows. I believe the "N" version is still offered. (But I might be
wrong!)

This list might help you if gpedit is unavailable.
It's a list of policy settings and their corresponding registry entries.
Windows 8 is in this file:
WindowsServer2012andWindows8GroupPolicySettings.xl sx

Home versions of Windows do not have secpol.msc or gpedit.msc, and
AFAIK cannot be installed. However, you can get the same effect for
most settings by editing the registry.

In your case, navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Lsa
and change the lmcompatibilitylevel key as follows (you shouldn't need
to, but if you have to add it, it is a DWORD value):

0 = use LM or NTLM1 only

1 = use NTLM2 if negotiated

2 = use NTLM1 only

3 = use NTLM2 only

4 = Domain Controller refuses LM Authentication

5 = Domain Controller only accepts NTLM2 (refuses LM and NTLM)

If option 3 selected then also set the following key value

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Lsa\MSV1_0

Set REG_DWORD item "NtlmMinServerSec"=0x00080000

This means "NTLMv2 session security" at a minimum; it's the 3rd of 4
levels of increasing security for NTLMv2.

Brilliant. Thanks (everyone) (especially ZB) I hadn't found this yet.
Apologies for the delay - been away with family stuff.
Tomorrow I'll mainly be in regedit ! (option 1 sounds good)

Okay, set this in reg. Unsure if it made the difference or not. I am now able to access the share but only if accessed with the
complete share name (not becessarily known) i.e. \\nas4\directoryshared. This is good, it is very good and makes the device
usable.
BTW the key was added (no present beforehand) with dword value 1.

However, if trying to browse (e.g. just \\nas4) it is not successful and this message is returned:-
\\nas4 is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to
find out if you have access permissions. Network error (1208).

Now I cut and pasted the above but do you know if it should be "LmCompatibilityLevel" as stated elsewhere on the web - sometimes
these are caps, othertimes not. With me adding the key, I could have it wrong. Or is this something else?

Caps don't matter in the registry, it just makes it easier to read for
us humans. As to the rest of your question, I don't really know enough
about NASs in general or your specific NAS in particular to be able to
be much help, sorry.

Ah yes, tried a few combinations - same result. For some reason I thought it did matter.
Thanks. At least it does go with the work-around. I think it is a samba / win8 thing - lot of moans on the web!
- I'll keep my xp pros going for as long as possible I think
