So it's possible for the user to have caused this, by something they installed as a right-click Context Menu entry. Paul |

It appears a Chrome update, (circa mid April, 2013), is responsible. Here are two fixes. Unsupported methods? Registry Junk: A Windows Fact of Life http://blogs.technet.com/markrussino...t-of-life.aspx "So it seems that Registry junk is a Windows fact of life and that Registry cleaners will continue to have a place in the anal-sysadmin’s tool chest..." Is that your opinion or do you have documentation for your claim? Both. Microsoft support policy for the use of registry cleaning utilities http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2563254 "Some products such as registry cleaning utilities suggest that the registry needs regular maintenance or cleaning. However, serious issues can occur when you modify the registry incorrectly using these types of utilities. These issues might require users to reinstall the operating system due to instability. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved without a reinstallation of the Operating System as the extent of the changes made by registry cleaning utilities varies from application to application." So basically they don't say don't use them, just that you're on your own if doing so breaks Windows. Then under "MORE INFORMATION": more of the same ("does not support the use", "not responsible for issues cause by", etc.): "We strongly recommend that you only change values in the registry that you understand or have been instructed to change by a source you trust, and that you back up the registry before making any changes." So they don't actually say don't, but they place the onus on you to make sure you know what you're doing. (With the tendency of most installers to create keys etc. consisting of long strings of hex., I'd defy most even savvy users to know what all the changes a cleaner suggests actually mean.) Registry Junk: A Windows Fact of Life http://blogs.technet.com/markrussino...2/registry-jun k-a-windows-fact-of-life.aspx which ends: "So it seems that Registry junk is a Windows fact of life and that Registry cleaners will continue to have a place in the anal-sysadmin’s tool chest, at least until we’re all running .NET applications that store their per-user settings in XML files – and then of course we’ll need XML cleaners." Which to me isn't a blanket rejection of them (even if it does use the nasty phrase "anal-retentive" - earlier in the article he says "I figured it was natural for a Registry cleaner to be an essential part of running a tight ship for the anal retentive systems administrator.", so he's not totally against, and may even consider himself to be a-r). Have XML cleaners appeared yet? [Personally I preferred the .ini - or similar - method of storing settings, especially for single-user computers, but I guess that's a lost cause now.] -- J. P.
