Default Desktop Search / Search assistant: have both on XP?

Sorry if this isn't the best possible group for issues related to desktop
search, but there's only one desktop_search group in the microsoft.public
hierarchy, and that's in French.

I often have to search for filename patterns in non-indexed locations that
I don't want indexed either, but desktop search won't do this - it very
consistently returns ZERO results.

Once WDS is installed you have to start WDS first, wait for it to open,
then click "use desktop companion" to do such a search.

Is there a way to get straight into search companion (or the older and
better Win2000 equivalent)?
A command line would do nicely, that way I can put it as an extra context
menu item in HKCR\Folder\Shell.
