Default ICS won't configure itself properly

Dear Everyone,

I would like to ask for help with my ICS. I have WinXP installed and I have
been trying for ever to set up the ICS that after an initial period when it
stopped working.

When i set up ICS on my server i receive no error. but when i try to set up
the network, my server display an error relative to the impossibility to set
the DNS.

When i look the ip setting of the server i see that it is not dynamic but as
far as my understanding both the client and the server are trying to behave
as clients.

Could you please suggest any resolution? It is more than 2 months I am
trying to fix this and I really do not want to reinstall the OS.

Thank you very much for any help
my best regards.

It is better if you bought a router and used this instead or a switch, for
better security and performance too.
But if you still would like to go a head Here are some steps to perform and
hopefully you will get Internet Connection
sharing up and running:
How to set up a ICS:
Hardwa
- Tow Computers
- The Host have Two NICs
- Cross-Over cable (if you will not use a hub with 10base-T/100base-T,
cat5, patch cable)
- Client have a NIC installed and all TCP/IP, DNS configured to get the
IP Auto.
- Enabling the ICS on both the Host and the Client

1 - How to set the Host:
You need to set the Host first as the Host will play the Distributor Role in
the ICS so you need to
set up correctly to allow ICS;

Click Start Control Panel Network and internet connections Network
Connections then Right click My network paces
and select Properties.
Here you should see or have two internet connection one for your Internet
connection and one for your local Area Network (LAN).
Right click Internet Connection and select properties.
On the Properties Window click on Advanced Tab and check these boxes:
Internet Connection Sharing:
[ ] Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet
Connection
[ ] Allow other Network users to control or Disable the hared Internet
Connection.
Click [OK] to Confirm your settings and close the Internet connection Window.

2 - Setting up the Client:
The same Go to the Control panel and Network Connections here at least
you should have one Internet connection Icon or Service
Installed, if not then your NIC or hardware not installed and you need to
install it configure it.
On the Local Area Network Right click and select properties.
Under general tab Highlight the Internet Protocol and click properties.

* Client for Microsoft Networks
* Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) 9If you don't have those then install
them)
Make sure the Machine getting an Automatic IP, DNS then click Advanced and
make sure also that there is not an old settings and all the DNS, WINS IP
filtering are all empty and there are no entries.

Der Nass,

Thank you very much for the most exhaustive answer i could hope for!

I have a note to add..
- the client is linux
- no firewalls are running
- after having tried with pc-pc connections with crossover, i got fed up and
- i have now a professional switch between them (with normal cables)

so should I in anyway modify the procedure with which I try to set up the
server?

Moreover I would like to add that I always set up just the server, while
just dhclient-ing the client (this worked before).

Thanks for your prompt help!
my best regards

Hi Marco,
I really don't have a Linux OS to perform the scenario ON to give a definite
answer but here some links to go through:
Windows to Linux Internet Sharing
http://blog.heuristicdesign.co.uk/ar...ernet-sharing/

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2844756
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=66789
You didn't mentioned if any error messages you receive when you try to share
between the two OSs or it was working then it doesn't any more?.
Best if you use a Switch to get the Internet and share Files on either OS.
