Default Blue Screen - What to do?

I've recently been getting the blue screen about once per day. When
the system is rebooted I get a message that it recovered from a very
serious error (or some such message).

I don't know what's causing this or what to do to eliminate the
problem. It mentions new hardware, but nothing's been added for a
longtime so doubt that's the cause.

I'm running WindowsXP Sp 3 on a Dell box.

Any help/suggestions appreciated as I'm concerned the computer will
just keel over & die.

Thanks!

Regards,
AB

Post the exact error message (write it down) which should include the HEX
codes.

Thanks, David.
Wonder if there's a log file where these error messages are saved that
I can access instead of waiting till the next time it happens?

The next time you get into Windows, press WinKey+Pause, click on the Advanced tab, and under "Startup and Recovery"
click Settings. Uncheck the box next to "Automatically Restart." Then, if you blue screen again, you'll have time to
write down any codes and post them here. Also include any file names that are listed after the hex codes; these could be
clues to what is causing them.

Here are a couple of free utilities you can use to read the dump files
left from those crashes, and try to determine what drivers are involved.
I use both of these... WhoCrashed you have to install and it will then
download some files from Microsoft to analyze with, after prompting you
to do so. BlueScreenView you just run, no installation needed. They
will show you what the errors were... post the errors here.

Thanks, Stefan; that's a helpful response. I printed out the

screen.

Ann, You don't have to wait till the next blue screen if you use one of
the programs that have been mentioned, to read the info from the last
blue screens you had.

Hi, a lot of useful things have already been suggested to you in this
thread. For example, somebody suggested that you get a couple of
programs for analysing the saved memory contents of the system before
the last crash, called a Complete Memory Dump (core-dump) or a Kernel
Memory Dump (mini-dump). One of those programs suggested is called
BlueScreenView, which I used a lot myself and swear by.

However, Bluescreenview or the other program won't work until and
unless you have turned on the memory-dump facility, so you'll have to
find out if you've got this facility turned on and if not, you'll have
to turn it on. Here's an explanation of how to do that:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316450
snip

Good post and info, but you do not need to change the setting to
Complete Memory Dump or Kernel Memory Dump, to get the details of a Blue
Screen. The default setting of Small Memory Dump (64KB) is sufficient
to give you the details of the blue screen.

Default Blue Screen - What to do?

Sorry it's taken me so long to post a follow-up; it's been quite an
experience!

After days of no blue screen, last week I got a blus screen with
'Fatal Error' message. Couldn't even boot up after that, so couldn't
try all those suggestions I was given in this thread. Instead, I
called a wonderful computer tech to come in and see if he could
resusitate my PC. Well, turned out that ZoneAlarm, my free firewall
was corrupted. He uninstalled it then installed a new .exe and mostly
all was well. My newsreader (an old version of Forte Agent - free
v3.3) was now corrupted. It's taken me days to replace; just got it
going now.

So I'm all smiles now! I do appreciate all the help gotten here!!

Glad you got it sorted out. I have seen way too many troubles on
systems using Zone Alarm over the years, I always tell my clients NOT to
install it, and I remove it from systems I maintain. The native Windows
firewall is sufficient for most home users. YMMV (for a little while).

Thanks, Glee. My consultant said the Windows firewall was OK to use
for a short time; if I were just going to need a firewall in the
interim before buying a new computer. (Current PC is 10 yrs old!)
Since I'd been running free ZA for many years without a single problem
and feel very safe with it, I preferred to reload it. I will however
remember your opinion if it happens again. And I will be looking into
purchasing a new computer, perhaps an all in one, to get rid of some
wires and the tower. Have to do some research.

I personally haven't seen much wrong with the Windows firewall that
comes included with Windows. I used to use ZoneAlarm in the past, and
it's biggest problem was too much protection, where it interfered with
legitimate uses of the network by other programs.
