Default Boot problem

I would like to get some advice on how to fix it.

The Problem. When booting up the PC, the system stops and I get the
message “Remove disks or other media. Press any key to restart”. The boot
order is CD, then HD but there is no disk in the DVD burner. If I insert the
WinXP operating disk, then the PC will boot up normally. I have also found
if I press F8 during turn-on, the system loads a “boot menu” (instead of
going to Safe Mode). Selecting the HD from the options on the “boot menu”,
the PC will then proceed to boot up normally.
One oddity about my system is that I have WinXP is loaded on partition C
and partition D (on the primary drive). Initially I installed WinXP on D
drive with C drive left blank as an anti-hacking strategy. I eventually had
to load WinXP on the C drive because the boot.ini file kept getting
corrupted. Since then the PC has operated for at least 9 months until this
problem occurred.
I have reviewed my boot.ini file (see below) but I don’t see any problem
with it.

[boot loader]
timeout=3
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP
Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP
Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer

I have run CHKDSK and I have re-installed WinXP on the C drive. Still
the problem persists. Any suggestions?

Default Boot problem

Hi Geetwo,

I don't have Windows XP installed on the C: Drive at all and it is
working fine.

Have you been running maintenance regularly on your Hard Drive? Have you
been using Explore to go into your \Temp folders and manually deleting its
contents then running Disk Cleanup followed by Chkdsk /r (both options
checked) and finally defraging the Hard Drive?

Also remove /usepmtimer from the startup of XP.

Default Boot problem

I ran defrag analyze and WinXP tells me that the hard disk does not need
defrag. I do not regularly run CHKDSK.
I'll try your advice and see what happens.
