Default Readyboost....

Hello,
I tried to install ReadyBoost on a 4Gb USB key.
Install with no problem, and Readyboost seems to work..
On the next re-boot, my Bios displayed a message:
"No OS installed....."
I have to remove the USB Readyboost key to enable the W8.1 Boot, then once
boot started, i re-plugged the USB Key and everything is working.
I tried to install Readyboot on another 16Gb Key and verified that there is
no problem with this key.
Questions:
1- Why i got this message on the 4Gb key ???
2- Is there any action to do to circumvent this problem ??
Many thanks for any answer.

Sounds like your boot order is set to usb first instead of your hard
drive. Check your bios settings.

KenW

Yes the boot order is set to USB first, I need it to enable boot on USB
sometimes.
But why the problem exist on the 4 Gb key and not on the 16Gb Key ??

Because that USB key has some boot code on it from something prior.
Launch diskpart. execute "list disk". Note which # is the USB key.
Now execute "select disk #" (replacing # with the disk number noted in
the prior step). now execute "clean". Now execute "exit". Now
re-setup Readyboost.

Hello Seth,
The USB KEY is a KINGSTON Datatraveler 4 Gb.
I did diskpart, and everything went good until Clean/Exit.
After that I got the key "unallocated"
Windows does not allow me to partition the KEY, nor to format it.
I used "SD Formatter" to format the key, and this, allow me to reinstall
Readyboost.
Now I got a hang at boot time, just after "Loading operating system"
I have to do like previously remove the Key at boot time and plug it after a
while....after that Readyboost seems to work.
Any other suggestions ???
Many thanks to every body.

Hmm, I thought readyboost would partition\format the drive...

Ok, do my steps above again, but before exiting diskpart, after the
"clean" command...

- create partition primary
- format fs=NTFS quick
- assign

then exit and try readyboos setup again. Your "SD formatter" is
probably booting some kind of boot record on the key which is causing
your boot hang.

In the great majority of situations, ReadyBoost is almost useless. It
only helps if you have very little RAM, and even then, it only helps
very little. I recommend against using it.

Ready Boost is carryover technology, marginally improved since
introduction and only really slightly beneficial on systems with 1 GB or
less of RAM when the same RAM is shared with video. Effectiveness
diminishes with increasing RAM and for the most part disappears entirely
at 4GB.

Test results for it, shown in the Vista introductory article.

Hello Seth,
Congratulations....
You are right, your last commands did the trick.
Now I can boot without removing the Key.
Many Thanks.

You said much the same thing I said, but you were more specific.
Thanks for the reinforcement.
