It's a good thing you said "or so" VBG It was 15 years. It started

if you're going to nitpick about years, you should at least get the
details correct.

while it technically was invented in 1989, it was an internal project
and unavailable to the public, so therefore it does not qualify as
having appeared.

it was not until 1991 when early tools were released outside cern and
1993 when the first publicly available browser appeared, when the web
as we know it began, with another year or two until its growth started
to spike.

in other words, the original claim of 'twenty years or so before the
web appeared' is exactly correct.

The first time I ever touched a computer was in 1989. I had volunteered
for a non-profit to do whatever they needed me to do. There were around
100. One of them handed me a computer and told me to update the database
mailing list for all those 100 volunteers.

I looked at the computer and thought about running away.... Then I
looked at the guy and said, i cant type very well, and i never worked
one of these computers. He taught me how to use that DOS based database
and although I typed with one finger, I did get that job done (weeks
later).

By mid 1990, I bought a used computer, and that guy installed that
database on it, so I could work at home. Soon I was doing word
processing as well, and then I bought a modem and began connecting to
local BBSs (bulletin boards). Thats when I met some of the guys on that
BBS (in person), who taught me more about computers.

Around 1993 or 94, was my first time on the internet. A local ISP just
opened, and they were giving free access for a month. The very first
thing I did on the internet, was these newsgroups. Shortly after, I
discovered the web. But the first browsers were horrible. I believe the
first one I used was called Mosaic. It constantly crashed and locked up
the computer. Then I found Netscape, which was a lot better....

So, yea, around 1994 was when I first went on the internet... The rest
is history...
